My husband and I are planning to do a couple of %26#39;hiking%26#39; tours during our stay on The Big Island, Oahu and Kauai. We%26#39;re hoping to do a walk through a rain forest, and do mountain scenery type tours. The various websites describe these as easy to moderate %26#39;hikes.%26#39; We don%26#39;t want to carry along hiking type footwear unless its really necessary. So, my question is - what should we plan to wear on these walks? I%26#39;m assuming the trails will probably be muddy in spots so typical white sneakers/track shoes will get covered - which isn%26#39;t such a big deal, but how muddy can the trails get?
Also, should we consider wearing long pants and use bug repellent?
Thanks!
Appropriate foot wear for rain forest hikes %26amp; mountain hikes
A pair of hiking sandals is great for this type of hike. You can splash through streams and pools, get them wet and then dry again. When you%26#39;re done just hose them off so it doesn%26#39;t matter if they get dirty. We also like to bring a pair of slippers (flip flops) so that once we get back to the car, we can change into those. And yes, the trails can get VERY muddy, depending on the weather.

Great suggestion. I hadn%26#39;t thought of the sandals for hiking. They would be light and easy.
Thanks!
