Kauai in January

I%26#39;m planning another trip to Kauai in January and will be staying in Hanalei. How snorkelable (if that%26#39;s a word) are Ke%26#39;e and Tunnels that time of year? Also will it be a good time to whale watching trip? Thanks.

Kauai in January

Jan can be very rough on northern shores. I wouldn%26#39;t count on snorkelling.

From our lanai, we see the most whales in Feb/march. Some in Jan.

The weather can always surprise you, but the north shore in January is almost guaranteed to have big surf. It%26#39;s not uncommon to have waves in the 20-40 foot range, so you should be prepared to head south, east or west (depending on the direction of the swell).

We were in Kauai last January and going back this January and the surf at tunnels was crazy. You would get sucked in to the ocean just standing in about a foot of water. Most of our snorkeling was done at Poipu and small beach by the Beach House restaurant. I spoke to others that said Lyndgate was OK to snorkel we will check that out along w/ salt pond this year.
