Snorkeling in December

My husband %26amp; I will be visiting Maui in December. We%26#39;ve been to the island 6 times, but always in July-Sept. I%26#39;ve heard that Honolua Bay (fabulous snorkeling in the summer) is ideal for surfers at that time of year, due to the wind. My question: is the water calm enough for snorkeling at Kapalua Bay, Black Rock, Kahekili (i.e. West Maui) in December? What about regular swimming conditions at Ka%26#39;anapali Beach? As avid snorkelers, just wondering if we should base ourselves in another part of the island ... South Maui, perhaps ... to be close to great snorkeling. Sorry if these are repeat questions. Thanks for any help.

The conditions change from day to day. You might get fabulous snorkeling conditions at Honolua even in December. My advice is get up as early as you can, get out and check the conditions, and if it looks good then jump in the water. The wind and waves usually pick up later in the morning and conditions get worse. But you should still have plenty of good snorkeling opportunities on West Maui.

That is good advise from rivera71. We have found that conditions could change from area to area and dramatically in a relativly short distance. I have never been there in the Winter but I have read before that the South Maui area is a bit rougher in the Winter but a local could give you better info than me. The book ';Snorkel Maui and Lanai says that when the surf kicks up on the West side to go to Kapalua because it%26#39;s usually as calm as it gets on Maui. I believe it. We went there in July and it was awesome and Black Rock was a bit rough.

One thing I will suggest which I suggest to people even in Summer is to wear a wetsuit. More so in Winter since the the water is a few degrees cooler. They keep your core warm, help with floatation, and are great sunscreen.

Hope your trip is great.
