comp1,
We have only been to Maui(4x) so I cannot comment on the other islands although we are likely going to another Island next year. As far as what I would consider the best hotels I would say Wailea overall(You will get several responses from others who have stayed in Wailea). We stay on the west side in the Kaanapali area.
As far as activities Maui has about everything from fabulous restaurants to Mountains, deserts, volcanoes and incredible views and about any water activity you can think of. There are not a lot of places that you can go on a 30 mile bike ride down the side of a mountain and only have to pedal 1/4 mile. We think it is truly one of the most beautiful places on earth.
This is a great site for information and take a look at the reviews as we have found them overall accurate.
honeymoon
comp1,
We went on our honeymoon when there was such a thing as a travel agent. We thought we wanted to go to a very quiet, nature oriented type island in the Caribbean, Dominica. Our travel agent talked us into Kauai because it suited our style best. We wanted to be able to take hikes, spend time in the ocean and really get immersed in nature. We splurged and went on a helicopter ride over the wettest spot in the world, Mt. Waialeale and the Napali coast. Absolutely breathtaking. Then we took a van tour of Waimea Canyon and Kokee State Park. We wanted to take a boat tour of the north side of the island but a storm prevented that. We took our own hikes in Kokee, went up to Ke%26#39;e beach on the other side of the island and just explored in our car and by foot. We stayed in Poipu at Kiahuna Plantation. It%26#39;s a low-rise condo property (no buildings higher than 3-stories). Its buildings nestled in lush gardens and lawns. Our condo was close to the ocean so we did not hear the famous chickens every morning. Now that we have kids, Maui is our Hawaiian island of choice. Just more kid friendly beaches and activities. Someday we hope to go to the Kopoho area of the Big Island where there are absolutely no activities except for lounging.
Skip the bike ride down Haleakala unless you both have the ';thrill gene';.
