Can someone please recommend a decent hotel in a good location for a young couple going to Kona Dec.13-16? I%26#39;d be greatly appreciative. We definitely are not ';fancy'; people- we want a local feel, but also cleanliness and a good location. Thank you!
Hotels around $200 per night at mostAssuming you plan to stay in Kona I would recommend the Sheraton in Keauhou. You can get a garden view room there on hotwire for $150/night and can upgrade to ocean view/front at the hotel.

Seconding the vote for the Sheraton.
Good luck and happy travels!
thats it......sheraton and maybe outrigger........ nothing else
you have only 2 choices
Based on the information in your post (young couple, not fancy, good location), I think you%26#39;ll be happier in an oceanfront condo that in a hotel room at the Sheraton. I recommend the Kona Reef or Hale Kona Kai, both of which are condo complexes within walking distance of ';downtown'; Kona where the shopping and restaurants are. The Sheraton isn%26#39;t near anyuthing (although you can get in your car and drive to restaurants, etc.). We%26#39;ve been very happy at the Kona Reef, staying in unit D3 which is right on the ocean. We pay about $160/night renting directly from the owner (we%26#39;ve done it a few times now). You%26#39;ll see more information about the Kona Reef in the reviews section of Trip Advisor. The Hale Kona Kai is also right on the ocean but the pool at the kona reef is nicer.
Booked directly with the agency that runs the Kona Islander Inn, and requested the absolute best rooms -- efficiencies on the third floor of the two buildings closest to Alii Drive, with ocean views, for just over $100/night. Walking distance to the shops and restaurants (Bubba Gump across the street). Has a small pool and hot tub that looked fine, but we didn%26#39;t use them. No daily maid service, no ice machine, and parking is limited, but for the price, it was great. You will see bugs and geckos, as the property is lush with foliage. Microwave and small refrigerator in room. Close to Walmart and Safeway for supplies. No real beach access, but that is typical of Kailua. Central location, IMO, for exploring the northern Kohala Coast, and Hilo / Puna district via the north (or Saddle Road)route, and Punalu%26#39;u / HVNP via the southern route. NOT fancy by any stretch of the imagination, but adequate for sleeping, showering and saving our money for good meals out and for excursions (ex: snorkle trip to Kealekekua Bay). Security was always around at night making rounds. 15 minute drive to/from airport if not at (evening) rush hour. If you want clean towels and sheets everyday, go with the above recommendations in Keauhou, just a short drive farther south.
Many condos will charge an additional cleaning fee for less than a 7-night stay. Be sure to ask about this when researching your options.
and add to that parking;; air conditioning, phone. which is what a lot of '; low price places'; are doing
As others said ,sometimes the price has a lot of hidden potential to suprise. you at the ned of the stay.
I Make all deposits on a credit card... if they demand cash or check that gives you no recourse and puts you at the mercy of some one else. Be cautious of rental direct from an owner, use a agency or regular managment fiirm that provides guarantees .
you might at that time be able to get the Hilton or Waikoloa condos for under 200. The period after thanksgiving to the week before christmas can offer Very low prices shop around.
