Where in Maui should you stay if you want beautiful beaches and surfing at the same time, but not to rough of a surf.
My son is 17 and he is a good surfer but i don%26#39;t want him in waves to big, but want him to be able to surf while we relax on the beach and where is a good place to stay that is not real expensive maybe on that same beach?

what is the best beach in Maui? Not sure what you mean by ';not too rough of a surf'; as that is decidedly relative :) However Kihei has exceptionally safe swimming beaches but they are lousy for surfing, barely acceptable for boogie boarding most days. There is the cove park in central Kihei just north of the Kama%26#39;ole beaches which is always great for beginning surfers but if you are at all experienced that will get quite boring.
West Maui south of Lahaina (Olowalu) has a great deal of intermediate level surfing all up and down the coast with acceptable swimming/sunning beaches on shore (for adults). There aren%26#39;t really any accommodations, other than camping, around there but it%26#39;s about midway between Kihei and Kaanapali so you can take your choice. Maalaea is probably the nearest place to stay near these particular bands of waves.
If you want real surfing challenge, head for the windward side and Hookipa. That%26#39;s where one finds the bigger hurt ;) Have Fun !
what is the best beach in Maui? What i meant by the surf is that I don%26#39;t want really big waves so that he can%26#39;t surf in them, maybe intermediate, i didn%26#39;t want him to get hurt while surfing. Our waves in florida are not that big most of the time avg 4ft, sometimes 6ft. but we don%26#39;t let him surf when hurricanes are out to sea then it is to big and rough.
Or do you think that the Big Island would offer more of what we are looking for?

I%26#39;ve never seen any good surf in Maui. It gets windy and blown out. Otherwise it%26#39;s flat. If it does break good, it%26#39;s way out there over the reef and on the north side.
The best chance would be in the winter, although I%26#39;ve been there in December and February and the surf was poor.
Listen to local radio. If the surf%26#39;s up, they will announce it. The locals will quit work and head for the ocean. I%26#39;ve seen that happen on Kauai.

Sounds like your son would be most comfortable out on the west side. As you drive towards Lahaina on the highway, you can see all the surfers lined up. I wouldn%26#39;t recommend Ho%26#39;okipa or Slaughter House or anything up north for him.
Hmm. The beaches that tend to be nice for hanging out and relaxing are generally not at surfing spots on Maui.
Not sure how you feel about Waikiki? Nice place to hang out while junior surfs, and prices are reasonable. If you don%26#39;t mind the busy atmosphere.
