Where can I find the best catch of the day?

We like fixing dinners on our own, local-style, while staying in Hawaii. Anyone know if there is a harbor on the Kona side that sells freshly caught, cleaned and filleted fish? If so, where and when? If not, are there any fish markets anyone could recommend? Appreciate any suggestions. Mahalo.

yes....... at the Marina, north side, by the boat ramp and ice house is a fish marrket. Also Safeway has an excellent fish counter too

Want live lobster and crab....... Kona Cold Lobster near the airport

1 lb bugs for 10.50 each 2 lb for 25.

My experience with the Honokohau store is different. Regardless, you can get really fresh fish at the Sack%26#39;N%26#39;Save, the manager of the fish section knows all the fishermen and gets fresh fish every day. (You can find the best poke there too!) I was told the Keauhou KTA is a good source too.

Konagrl57,

Keauhou KTA is good, or was so I second that. If you make it over to the Hilo side Suisan still does sell fresh fish. I have also heard good things about Sack’N’Save, but no personal experience with the Kona one.

Good luck and happy travels!

Thanks, everyone for your suggestions. The KTA in Keauhou sounds like a good option for us as we will be staying nearby. Anyone have any grilling/marinating ideas for fish they%26#39;d like to share? :)

Sounds like you do vacations like we do. We rarely go out to eat, preferring our oceanfront lanai for ambiance. Hubby grills fish nearly every night we are in Hawaii. Our favorite, easy way to fix grilled fish is smear Maui Mustard and salt and pepper on both sides and throw on the grill.

Mmmm.... grilled fish... one of my favorites.

Depending on the fish, I like a simple Ginger/Soy Marinate. Fresh Ginger, bit of soy and perhaps some olive oil, a grind or two of pepper, a bit of garlic.

Set it in the fridge for 20 mins or so and grill to yummy perfection.

If you like, bring the marinade to a rolling boil in a saucepan, reduce and serve as a glaze on the side.

I don%26#39;t like to hide the flavor of the fish, it%26#39;s meant to enhance. Sweet/sour, salty and sweet...it%26#39;s all about balance.

Now I%26#39;m hungry!

Wishbone Italian dressing very quick, place in ziplock and squeeze air out min 20 minutes then grill skin side down till fat oozes to top or just becomes flaky. After this shrimp vans on Kauai hold nothing for garlic fish-but not too garlicie. Great for chicken and other as well. Variation for fish western dressing as well.

Dont go to Keauhou KTA... it has poor meat and poor fish. the fish is pretty bad and also most is frozen.....Sack N.Save or Safeway in Kona are the best bets.

Thanks, hawaiidan. Will keep that in mind.
