Aloha!
Our Hawaii trip is only 19 day away now!!! It will be our third trip to the Big Island.
First of all, I just want to thank all of you that post here regularly. I%26#39;ve taken notes on all the wonderful inside tips on restaurants and activities that you%26#39;ve given.
This question has to do with buying jewelry (men%26#39;s bracelet, woman%26#39;s earrings/necklace). I was wondering where the locals would shop. I%26#39;m thinking that the places along Alii drive might be more geared toward the tourists, and that there might be better choices/quality and better prices to be found elsewhere. We%26#39;ll be traveling to all areas of the BI. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
Lori
Best places to purchase gold jewelry on BI
Jewelry is not really in fashion here except Hawaiian jewelry worn by women. Royal Hawaiian Heritage Jewelry is the least expensive but it%26#39;s mass production. (Next to Long%26#39;s Drugs in the Lanihau Center.) For more unique designs I would recommend Big Island Jewelers in the Banyan Court Mall on the corner of Alii Drive and Na Hoku right below Pancho %26amp; Lefty%26#39;s.

hawaiian jewelry shop up road (in mall on corner) from Hilo Haitiis in Kona about northeast. Old wood display cases, light pink outside next to smoothie stand. Oriental restaurant across mall from them. Sorry cant remeber name or more details but they are usually most reasonable. You may want to check out kmart/walmart for their sales but better quality and prices for try above jewelry store.
yellow pearls are the newest thing.
I%26#39;ve never been able to fathom the number of ';fine'; jewelers (gold and gems) in Prince Kuhio Plaza in Hilo. Someone must be buying a lot of jewelry, I%26#39;m guessing it%26#39;s the Asian community.
Those I know who have needed jewelry here that wasn%26#39;t an art design have waited for Macy%26#39;s sales. I know, you can get that on the mainland, but here Macy%26#39;s 50% off sales are among the best options for something to please your sweetie. LOL.
I think the Alii Drive places are total tourist traps but that%26#39;s just my impression. I dislike those stores.
If you want local made earrings there%26#39;s a gallery (or two) in Hawi with pretty ';art'; jewelry. There%26#39;s also a local lady who sets up a stand at Kealakekua Bay if she%26#39;s still there, with pretty and oh so cheap island style earrings and necklaces. She also makes hand-batiked lava lavas and other clothing.
KK, I have to assume you never checked out Big Island Jewelers in the Banyan Court Mall and Na Hoku on Alii Drive. They both have unique designs that you will not find anywhere else and they certainly are not ';tourist traps'; since they cater to the locals too. (They both advertise on local TV for like 20 years.)
I give the highest score for quality, honesty to Big Island Jewelers.
They are not a tourist trap and I have used them over the years..... they are the best repair service and also have a ton of custom items that they make... they will and can craft you anything......
They are on Alli drive under the Banyan tree past the King Kam Hotel........
hi TT, your assumption is right and I%26#39;m not at all dissing your choices... when I came here as a visitor, the tourist trap energy around Alii -- where there were lots of jewelry offerings -- sent me running away quick because it was so not what I came to the island to be around. I never dug deep into the area to find the gems, so to speak. I%26#39;m not even sure where the shops are that you mentioned. You are the expert on Kailua-Kona, not I! %26lt;smiles%26gt;
The jewelry shops in Prince Kuhio don%26#39;t seem special, but they might be something to check out for price comparison as LotusVixen will be traveling around the island. There%26#39;s a lot of jade offered there. There%26#39;s also the Black Pearls outfit in Kawaihae Harbor.
