bringing alcohol to wakiki

I%26#39;m nearly 20 and coming to Hawaii for a holiday at the end of the year. Here in Australia it%26#39;s been legal for us to drink for two years. Is there anyway we can get alcohol over there? How strict are the liquor stores with checking ID ?

I am over 40 but from what I see they are supposed to check ID for anyone that looks 30 and younger.

I know the grocery store I went to when we lived in Atlanta they had to put EVERYONE%26#39;s birth year in the cash register before it would let them buy alcohol even if they were 90 years old.

Most retailers in Waikiki are fairly strict about enforcing the drinking age limits...

Particularly at the ';chain'; stores like ABC and 7-11 which have strong -in-house training and procedures. Without condoning any underage drinking, you would fare best at the private little ';mom %26amp; pop'; mini-marts...like the one on Seaside just past Kuhio.

While I am not a club rat, most seem to check just about everybody%26#39;s ID regardless of age.

At meals, if you are with older folks and they are imbibing you probably are about 50/50 in getting hassled. If it is just a bunch of younger guys, you will almost certainly be carded.

We are a country with double standards. While you can join the army, can get married or vote before 21, you can%26#39;t drink. Establishments can lose their liquor license by serving alcohol to ';underage'; people so they don%26#39;t risk it. Have you heard of a fake ID? :)

Hmm ... probably depends on where you are and if liquor stores in the area have recently been busted for selling to minors. The stores themselves get in trouble for selling to underage people, so many do card anyone who looks under 30 or even 40.

Of course a fake ID would work ... and if it%26#39;s an Australian ID, what%26#39;s the likelihood of them even knowing if it%26#39;s real or not?

I personally wouldn%26#39;t try it on vacation b/c I wouldn%26#39;t want to run the risk of law enforcement giving me a hard time about it.

Most of the time you%26#39;ll just get slapped on the hand and let go, but if they happen to be in the middle of a big ';stop underage drinking'; campaign or if you happen to have a run in with a cop who%26#39;s in a bad mood, it could be an unpleasant experience.

That%26#39;s one thing that works in our favor when we%26#39;re traveling your way!! :)

Sorry my friend - when in Rome... Just as American teenagers on summer trips to Europe get a thrill over having a glass of wine, here in the states - it%26#39;s illegal for you to drink. I%26#39;m pretty sure even trying to buy alcohal illegally is a crime and I%26#39;m definatelly sure having someone older buy it for you - for them and you.

Believe it or not - you can have a good time without drinking. Order virgin drinks - dacquari%26#39;s are great - and just don%26#39;t risk it. It%26#39;s not worth it. Just think of all the money you%26#39;ll save!

sorry... no underage drinking is a serious problem here and the state and police are cracking down on anyplace that sells or serves liquor..... they request ID on anyone who looks under 30.

No one is going to risk a huge fiine and the loss of a liquor licence

. They also have DUI road blocks frequently and check all drivers....... iIts also against the law to drink in parks or at beaches.

You can enjoy Hawaii without booze.... there is more to it than that
