Hats

Do many of you wear hats for sun protection or are they difficult to handle with the stiff breezes? I kinda want to bring a wide brimed hat but I%26#39;m afraid I will be chasing it all over the Island. Are baseball caps better?

T

Hats

IMO a hat is a necessity. Baseball is more likely to stay on your head but does not protect your ears and neck very well.

Rather than packing and crushing, or carrying on, One of our Maui rituals is buying soon after arriving. Wide Brim straw, with loose leather strap for wind protection. There%26#39;s a great hat store on Front Street in Lahaina - I think it%26#39;s ';Lahaina Hat Company'; - not too expensive either.

Hats

Thanks Miney, that Really helps me out. My hair is not getting any thicker up top so I do need protection on the dome also. My hat does have a chin cinch but will take up alot of space without crushing it. Look like it%26#39;s best to buy on Island. Thanks again.

T

Hats are an absolute must.

If you really want get with the Aloha Spirit, take a look at the Hawaiian style buckets at: rainbowhawaii.com/bh1.html

Try Long%26#39;s %26amp; ABC Store also. They have an expensive selection of hats as well.

sorry , meant to write ';inexpensive'; selection.

Thanks for your posts

We are off to church to sing tonight and then to Maui tomorrow morning. Thanks to all who post their trips and give so many helpful hints. I have enjoyed reading them all. I am a TA addict. Hope all goes well with our travels and I will post a trip report when we return.

    Aloha

    Maui here we come

Have a safe and magical trip. I%26#39;ll look foward to your report when you return.

Have a fantastic trip!! :) Let us know when you return.

    Poipu Beach to Hanalei Bay

Does anyone know how long the drive is from Poipu Beach area to Hanalei Bay?

    Poipu Beach to Hanalei Bay

It depends on the time of day and traffic, but it%26#39;s usually around 45 minutes to 1 hour.

    Poipu Beach to Hanalei Bay

Gotta be closer to an hour. It%26#39;s 30-35 minutes just from Poipu up to Kapa%26#39;a, IME.

I agree with pzp; allow an hour. Particularly if there is a bit of traffic through Lihue and Kapa%26#39;a.

Does anyone know if they%26#39;ve repaired and re-opened Both lanes of the flood damaged stretch of Hwy. near the Lighthouse? Plan on a delay there also, if only one lane is useable.

The road is back to two lanes...

    Loved our vacation there.

Lahaina Shores Beach Resort is the place to stay in Lahaina. Do try to get an ocean front room.

The condos are roomy and private, and you can%26#39;t beat the view. We watched a storm come in one night--it was outrageously beautiful.

Not only close but also great exercise to walk to the near-by attractions. Great places to eat, drink and be merry.

    Five stars.

Carol, did you write a Trip Report yet? If not, give us the whole scoop.

    Auto Rental- Let's Compare!

Hi everybody! Me lookin to get the best auto rental possible. My trip is planned for arrival in Maui on October 30th and we plan on doing lots of touring. Help me out. So far, the best weekly rates I have been offered look like this for a convertible (yes, we may be splurging, but I got time to change my mind!):

    alamo-275.45;

    avis- 389.99;

    budget- 379.99;

    dollar- 337.24;

    hertz- 374.99;

    national- 299.45

    These were offerd by e-car-rentals.com

Any other convertible renters out there I%26#39;d love to hear about your experiences. Seems like only 2 models are available, the Chrysler Sebring and the Ford Mustang, which is more expensive but has more trunk space, which is a big feature to consider for us, since we shop till we drop!

    Thanks.

PS- we cancelled our reservations at the Sheraton Maui to go for the convertible. Decided we just would enjoy being on the road touring more than being at the resort touristing. The $390/nite before tax and fees rate we saved will buy a lotta gas! It had better stop raining by October!

    Auto Rental- Let's Compare!

OK, My Rental car is part of a pakage and all the Docs are at home so I can%26#39;t give you and exact price till later.

If I%26#39;m reading this right, Are you gonna sleep in the convertible or you just canceled a room an the Sheraton for a less expensive room?

    T

    Auto Rental- Let's Compare!

I just booked our rental car in Maui for our trip at the end of this month through Priceline..Car was $20/day or $137 total for 5 days, including taxes. This is for a full size car. They did offer me a convertible for $30/day but we declined it (Need the space of a 4 door car for 2 couples). I found considerably higher rental car prices when I looked at individual car rental websites and also contacted several discount rental car agencies in Maui.

As for our hotel room, booked it through Hotwire.com and again, had fantastic luck. We were able to get a room at Sheraton Maui for $180/night.

We didn%26#39;t rent a convertable, but Thrifty had pretty good rates, and I compared alot of companies. I don%26#39;t think they had the Mustang convertables though.

We are renting through the attached website. We got a jeep through Thrifty and are paying less in price if you book off the companies%26#39; website!

    http://hawaiidiscountcarrental.com/

we went thru costco and have a convertible @ 30 per day including tax and w/ no fee for extra driver. there have been a LOT of negative posts about Alamo, therefore we also have a reservation w/ hertz in case we%26#39;re not happy w/ the vehicle. (filth cockroaches, smell.) : O

Just reserved through Priceline for our trip to Maui in June. $26/day for fullsize car. Cancelled reservation made last week with same rental company (National Car), saving $65. Yippee!

Hi everybody and thanks for your comments.

RocHed11- LOL! We do not- yet- plan on sleeping in the car. We are now shopping less expensive alternatives (i.e cheap sleep)!

oclife- $30.00 a day is much better than what I have been ofered so far! Thanks for sharing that! Hotwire.com must have grabbed some excess inventory at the price you noted for the Sheraton Maui ($180.00/night). Best buy I have seen by far. So maybe it pays to wait until the end of the month to book! Hope you will post back with your report and tell us all about it. You just might have the pool house out back or a cabana! LOL!

CridT- thanks for the tip about Thrifty! I will definitely check them out!

HuskerCat- thanks very much for providing that web site. Most helpful!

mich711- beware of cockroaches at all times! I have rented with Alamo many times previously but appreciate the heads up. BTW- where do you look for them?

I%26#39;ll keep posting rates as my departure dates grow near. Hope all convertible renters post with their tales of top down adventure.

    Mahalo!

    Renting Surfboard

I know you can rent surfboards on Waikiki beach but if you want to rent one for a week where is the best place to rent?

    Renting Surfboard

Try Planet Surf on Kapahulu - they have used boards %26amp; a friend rented a good one from them, but I don%26#39;t know if they still do it.

    Renting Surfboard

Is Planet Surf in Waikiki? Any other recommendations of board rental shops within Waikiki? Hopefully within walking distance from the Duke-statue-area surf breaks, while carrying a heavy longboard. I%26#39;ll be visiting in June, and definately want to hit those wonderful Waikiki waves!

There are various beach activity concessionaires along the central Waikiki beachfront hotels and/or public beach accessways that could rent you a board. Its typically by the hour or for the day and is overpriced.

If you want a nice board for up to a week, check-out Hawaii Surfboard Rentals (imaginative name, huh). They will deliver the board to your hotel and pick it up when you leave....all for about $100 per week.

    See their website for info:

For anyone who is in Maui or just returning, what is the story with the rain? It still says rain/thunderstorms for all of next week. anyone have any new updated info

    weather update, please!

any feedback on the weather today? rain or sunshine?

I appreciate any news. leaving in 3 days

    weather update, please!

I sweating it too. We leave on the 29th. I talked with someone last night at a party who got back last week. Said that weather.com showed rain everyday they were there. But when they got there it was beautiful the whole time. I am so stressed about the weather, its taking some of the fun away.

Hey guys, I too was kinda nervous about the weather untill i went to www.hawaiiweathertoday.com I suggest you poke arround there and your fears will be lifted.

Have a great trip and remember Maui is known for it%26#39;s many Rainbows and for there to be rainbows there has to be both Rain and Sun

    T

Yes this is true, there must be rain to have rainbows. Either way its Maui, CMON! there is no worries of a great time!

Just got back 2 days ago. The weather.com and accuweather.com both showed rain everyday with like 60% chances. I was disappointed until we arrived to blue skies and sunshine. We had a very slight MIST twice the whole week (one on the road to Hana). Their news casts said that the weather would be back to normal for this week.

Thanks so much for that last post. Weather.com is such a downer. Shows 50% chance of rain daily and Most cloudy everyday. Crap I%26#39;ve got that here!!

I am going on the 25th and have also been very nervous. Someone I work with was there this past week and said the weather was beautiful. No problems! I think I am swearing off weather.com because everytime I would look I would be so depressed. Last time we were there it would rain for 10 minutes and go away. The rain was more like a refreshing mist. It was perfect. Hope everyone has a good time on their trip! For those who have never been, you will fall in love with the islands!

    Pictures of Molokai

philip, they are nice photos. it is something you don%26#39;t see on postcards. you have captured the real soul of the island%26#39;s interior which is pristine and accessible with some difficulty. we have two a.t.v.s and hubby takes similar pictures. my favorite one is taken of waikolu lookout, the waterfall with a bright rainbow infront. i see you have one of kalaupapa lookout with a rainbow over the peninsula. it is not often that one sees a rainbow way below from where it is taken.

    Pictures of Molokai

Oh, Philip! What spectacular photos - those of a true artist. The ';metallic-looking'; banyan tree blew me away. I%26#39;d love to read a trip report. We are hoping to visit Molokai, and there%26#39;e just not nearly the info out there that there is for the other islands...

I loved your pictures. What kind of camera do you have? We love to take pictures - and take A LOT. Sometimes we get amazing shots, but we are always trying to improve.

We were just in Molokai - but just for the day, so we didn%26#39;t see much of what your pictures were. But, it makes me want to go back and see more.

Nice eye Philip. Good composition, and it looks like you have a nice variety of lenses.

The close-up of the gears caught my attention with the extremely shallow depth of field. Looks kinda like one of my favorite lenses - f/1.2? f/1.4?

The close-up of the flowers is stunning as well!

Actually that picture was taken with the kit lens on my Canon SLR.

    Thanks for the kind words!

Those are beautiful pics Phil, do I really live there? :)

Your pictures capture the essence of the places you visited. My husband and I visited Molokai a few years ago and also took the mule ride to Kalaupapa. It was an experience we will always remember. Thank you for sharing your beautiful works of art- you are a gifted photographer.

No, I live in San Diego! We were just there for 5 days.

    Thanks!

where to go to see some legal street racing?

I understand the Hawaii Raceway is closing down in April 2006. Is there another place in Honolulu or surrounding where one might go to see some good racing?

where to go to see some legal street racing?

Unfortunately no. The raceway park closed the other week (end of March??) and there was some rallying at the Capitol to keep it going. Don%26#39;t know what happened after that. Now I%26#39;m afraid we%26#39;ll all be %26#39;obtacles%26#39; if the renegade racers start using the freeway as their course.

where to go to see some legal street racing?

Right. The issue at the leg was whether the taxpayers should subsidize the raceway, and they passed (for now).

    Waikiki condos

Has anyone stayed at the 444 Nahua condos? Mahalo

    Waikiki condos

They%26#39;re all individually owned, so I can%26#39;t speak to a certain unit.

But the building is in an excellent location, and one that should be a relative bargain for Waikiki, given that it%26#39;s on a side street without an ocean view. Some units will be noisy with Ala Wai traffic, but that%26#39;s not usually too bad at night.

It gives easy driving access for heading out of Waikiki in either direction, east up Kuhio or west up the Ala Wai. And you%26#39;d be in good walking distance to anywhere in Waikiki or even the spots just outside, like Ala Moana or Kapahulu, via the Ala Wai pathway.

You%26#39;d also be close to the largest grocery store in Waikiki, and the free sunset hula shows on Kuhio Ave.

    Herbalgirl- You will be missed!

Herbalgirl-- You seem to be the ';Queen of the Maui Forums'; with so many good ideas, research and comments. Everyone seems to love you and you will be missed by many while you are gone! What a better send off to Magical Maui than to be so warmly missed by so many nice people. I think I can speak for most all of us who sincerely wish you an amazing trip with the MOYD (Man of Your Dreams).. Dance, Snorkle and Hula for all of us waiting for ';our turn';. We look forward to reading your amazing experiences in Paradise and hope they all live up to your dreams.. We all have our fingers crossed for you and P.. :).. Herbalgirl- You will be missed!

    Ditto.

    Did she go already?

I totally agree, You%26#39;re an inspiration to us all. I believe she leaves the 23rd. I know we leave a week later so I%26#39;ll have to wait an extra week to find out how their trip went

You are all so sweet!! (Not everyone on T.A. loves me or even likes me- ha! Trust me on that one!) I am not the queen, just the most crazy/obssessed/drooling at the moment, since I leave so soon.

Anyway, everyone ELSE on this forum has helped me so much and they are the true kings and queens. Kaiwahine knows SO MUCH about her homeland, as does localgirl, Halemale, pzp, pelakai, Alohawahine (and so many other visitors- too many to name.) I still have 9 days to go, but at least I am into the single digits. :) I bought a 1 gig film card today. Will do a Trip Report, including hotel info, meals, hikes, etc.

herbal girl, are you hoping to get engaged while you are there? I thought I read something about that. My daughter was in Maui in Feb and thought she was going to get engaged. When see realized it wasn%26#39;t going to happen, she spoiled the trip for herself and her boyfriend. The weather was bad while they were there. They are from PX and can%26#39;t understand why anyone loves or goes to Maui. They hated it. I%26#39;m sure it had all to do with expections. We even talked about that before she went. Anyway, I hope you have a great time, even if you don%26#39;t get that ring.

bigmac- I suspect that I am older than your relative and I have zero expectations, which is why I will have an incredible time, ring or no ring. It would be nice if it happened and fine if it doesn%26#39;t. I create my own experiences with no attachments and will be elated just to be in such a gorgeous, scenic, romantic place with my partner. If it rains, I don%26#39;t care. If I don%26#39;t get engaged, I don%26#39;t care. Honestly. :) Thanks for your concern- that is nice. Anyway, my relationship is amazing as is and I feel very lucky.

Herbalgirl, You have a wonderful attitude. The very best of luck to you. By the way, if you don%26#39;t mind me asking-about what time is your flight back to Ca on the 30th?

    T

I think our flight back is around 12:30pm or so, off the top of my head.

We take I think the same one a week later.

    Herbalgirl,

I see that you have been constantly on this site, posting every 2 hours or less! LOL! I know I did the same when I was only days away from leaving for my dream vacation!

Looking forward to your trip reports, have a fabulous time!

    hotels on kaanapali beach,Maui

Ok 1st you need to know which is a resort hotel and a condo complex. Kaanapli Beach Hotel is a very fine resort, The Whaler is a Condo complex. Kaanapli has a good mix of both.

You can save money by renting direct from a condo owner. My wife and I have found a great couple with an absolute beatuiful condo at The Whaler. If you are interested you can go to www.magicalmauicondo.com

Do the homework and let your self decide what is best for you.

    hotels on kaanapali beach,Maui

All of the places you mentioned are wonderful places to stay on the best beach on Maui. It really depends on what you like. The Whaler is high density in high rise, Kaanapali Beach Hotel is a little more spread out but still high rise. These first two are right near Whaler%26#39;s Village and many other high rise hotels. Lots of people around. Maui Kaanapali Villas is north of Black Rock and the above mentioned places. It is low density and low rise (except for one 6 story building) and on a gorgeous beach that does not have many people on it. You can either walk or take the free trolley to Whalers Village. All to say it depends on your taste - do you like lots of people around or less people. Visit vrbo.com for some great choices of condos at Whalers or Maui Kaanapali Villas which you can rent for less directly from the owners.

Kind oif a silly question but Does the sand on the beaches give you a Hotfoot mid afternoon? I imagine the Black Sand beaches would be the worst.

    T

    Hot Sand

I think it also depends on the time of year..we were in Maui in early September one time, and my hubby hot footed all the back to the car when we were on Sugar Beach....

    Hot Sand

It was overcast the day we went to the black sand beach on Maui, but when I went to one on the Big Island in Feb.... WOW!!! I was seriously wishing I had my tennis shoes on because all I had was flip flops and sand kept getting on me... it was VERY hot!

location of a good restaurant in Kona

Would you tell me, folks, the location of a good restaurant where I can savor New-York cut steak along with onion soup?

Also, I%26#39;d like you to recommend a good sushi bar/restaurant for me in the Kona area. Last time I went to Honolulu, I was amazed at the way they served me at a sushi bar in Royal Hawaiian Garden Hotel. The idea I had had that you just can%26#39;t savor real sushi other than in Tokyo was totally erased. Wanna find another comparable place this time.

    Cheers!

location of a good restaurant in Kona

The best Onion Soup (Maui) is at Rooster%26#39;s (Alii Drive) and the best sushi is at Hayama (Kopiko Plaza.) We don%26#39;t really have a steakhouse in Kona except Outback%26#39;s. You might want to check out konaforum.com for restaurant reviews.

location of a good restaurant in Kona

The combination steak and onion soup is very French and only La Bourgone in Kona and Daniel Theibault in Waimea will have it... Rios and Huggos in Kona. Roosters a fine but very tiny hole in the wall.. like 6 ot 8 tables... Kona Inn maybe

As for sushi.. try also Kenichi in Keauhou

    Thanks for your great advice.

    I really appreciate it.

We actually went to Rooster%26#39;s tonight just to try the steak. They only have Rib Eye but it was done perfectly. Of course I wouldn%26#39;t miss the Maui Onion Soup there, I have it every time, and it was delicious as always. They have jazz music on Friday nights so make sure to make a reservation if you go there Friday since they only have seven tables inside and two outside. BTW, if you pay cash you will get a 10% discount.

    Thanks a lot, t.t.

I will definitely go to Rooster%26#39;s some Friday night to enjoy steak, onion soup and

jazz music of which I am a great fan.

Incidentally, I won%26#39;t forget to pay in cash.

    Horseback Riding on Maui?

Not too many horseback riding reviews in these great TA forums. I was told you MUST take a trail ride in Maui.. a highlight of the mystical island.. If there is anyone who has done that and would like to share, I (and others, I am sure) would love to know your experience. We will be sure to post our trail ride for those who are struggling with choosing what to do. So many great activities, so little time....Thanks again for all the great tips and comments...

    Horseback Riding on Maui?

Rode with Pony Express several years ago into the crater of Haleakala. It was beautiful, but a long day. Horses travel one behind the other down a trail, lunch at the bottom, and then back up. It was great, but I%26#39;m not sure I would do it again. Only because it was an exhausting day.

    Horseback Riding on Maui?

We also did the Haleakala ride with Pony Express - really enjoyed and recommend it. Long but incredible experience IMO.

On this forum I have also read a lot of good comments about rides offered by Mendez Ranch - you may want to do a forum search to read more about the Mendez option.

we also used pony express to go into the crater and it was the best thing we did by far.

In 2004 we went horseback riding with Ironwood Ranch which is about 20 minutes north of Kaanapali. We really enjoyed it/had a good experience. In 2000 we went with a company (don%26#39;t remember the name) that has since gone out of business on the northwest side of Haleakala/East Maui Volcano.

A few pictures from our 2004 family trip:

    barefoot-in-maui.com/maui-attractions-and-ac…

We are going riding on Maui, but off the beaten path. (Near Oheo Gulch/Kipahulu area at Maui Stables) Will post info when we return. Have heard great things about the ride down the Sliding Sands Trail in Haleakala crater.

We just did the Pony Express ride last week down Haleakala. As mentioned by someone else, it is a LONG day. From Wailea, it takes about 45 mins to get to the base, then another 45 mins to the summit. Once up there, you get on the horses, ride down 2 hours, take about 30-45 min lunch break, and then 2 hours back up the crater. It truly is an all day event.

I have heard many, many good things and Mendez ranch and would have definitely done it if we were staying over in the Kaanapali area. It%26#39;s my understanding the trail ride there is about 90 mins.

My sister did horseback riding years ago out of the Makena area (Makena Stables, perhaps?), and since she was a more experienced rider, her trek across the slopes of Haleakala were the hightlight of our trip for her. They didn%26#39;t follow any specific trails, just rode the horses freely across the countryside, while looking out over La Perouse Bay. Not sure if you%26#39;d be up for that rather than just taking a trail ride, but for the experienced rider, I think it would be more thrilling than just following a trail.

here is a link to Makena Stables:

    http://www.makenastables.com/

Have fun whichever ride you choose.

We did a lot of research on Maui trail rides and did not want an all day, exhausting one but a beautiful scenic ride (not to use up too much precious time) for the memory. We decided on the Mendes Ranch which has valleys, waterfalls, cliffs and beautiful scenery in a short (2 hour) morning ride or afternoon ride OR a ride and barbecue lunch. Possiboly some other options..? We are skipping the lunch for a 2 hour morning ride and will post our experience when we get back in mid May,.. (IF we can get on the plane with our cast..) Aloha

Make sure you all stretch your legs before you ride. The last time Wife and I rode horses, neither of us could walk normal for a few days.

    Have a great time, T

I rode with Makena Ranch one year. The horse was AWESOME. (I%26#39;ve been riding since age 3, so it makes a big difference to me.) We rode out on the south flank of Haleakala and up to one of the old cinder cones. Fascinating to see that terrain up close. The ride was only three of us plus the leader - virtually a private outing.

    Haleakala with the top down?

Hi all, Has anyone tried driving to the summit to see the sunrise with the top down the whole way? How brutal is the cold? I think it would be amazing to drive with all the stars overhead.

    T

    Haleakala with the top down?

The cold is pretty brutal with no wind, so I would think you%26#39;d freeze yourself driving with the top down, unless you were very bundled up.

    Haleakala with the top down?

    Brrrrr!!!, I dare you.

won%26#39;t be a big deal. just be sure to pack the ski coat, pants, hat, and gloves next to the swimsuit and flip-flops!!!

Only if you%26#39;re part polar bear!

The day we went it was a mix of rain and sleet. Plus we had about 40 mile an hour winds. It was almost impossible to walk to the little viewing hut at the top. Which I might add was flooded becasue of all the rain. But by golly we%26#39;d come all that and we were going to brave the weather...no matter what! We went with a tour company so we had rain gear and ski gloves!

We saw just a sliver of sun, one of those that was so quick if you blinked you missed it.

I was disappointed and wanted to see that beauftul sunrise you see in the tour books.

Oh well, mother nature is a fickle lady!

Go for it! You will eventually thaw out! And please post back with the outcome.

PS- will you keep it down in the rain?

and please comment on my auto rental post about convertible pricing too, pretty please!

If it%26#39;s raining, the top goes up. The coldest I ever was in my life was at a Packer Game in Milwaukee with an easterly wind off Lake Michigan while it was raining and about 40 degrees. After three hours I literally could not feel my feet until we got home. Walking to the car, I thought I was going to sprain an ankle.

I forgot to add- If it%26#39;s raining I go back to bed.

Any input on condo options around the marina - like the Ilikai Marina? Looking for reasonably priced 1 bedroom. Ocean view would be appreciated if possible. We are one couple and an extra son (adult). Need separate sleeping spaces, but happy to share one unit. I%26#39;m saturated with searching the web. Need some human input. ALSO - any recommendations of booking with vrbo vs with rental agency?

    Suite Paradise Kiahuna Plantation

Has anyone stayed at the Kiahuna Plantation booked through Suite Paradise? Most of the units at Kiahuna Plantation are rented through a couple other companies, but I was wondering how the units through Suite Paradise coompare. I have read good things about the complex in general. Thanks.

    Suite Paradise Kiahuna Plantation

    Van, aloha

    KIAHUNA PLANTATION: thru suite paradise.

We have been booking with suite paradise for 13 years now, but have always stayed at poipu kai. Not far from Kiahuna Plantation.

NOT ONE PROBLEM, ever...zip, zero, nada...and love the dickens out of them.

KIAHUNA is a great place, and even tho we have not stayed there, have heard only glowing reports from those who have. We have walked the property, however, and it looks great.

You are diligent in your research, and have selected a good property, as well as property managers.Excellent. (IMHO)

What we have AWAYS found at Poipu Kai...

Suite paradise always had our resevation squared away.

Never had to wait in line when registering.

While signing in, if you wish, they will brew up your E KOMO MIA ( welcome ) maitai.

Which is great after traveling, and puts you immedieately into island mode.

Units are large, clean, luxurious, well appointed and decorated. Parking has always been assigned, or right out front.

No bug, or biting critters to deal with, ever!

other nice surprises await, that you will discover. Check out the refer when you arrive. Nice touch.

And, you will be right at the beach !!!

    Suite Paradise Kiahuna Plantation

We stayed at KP with Suite paradise last July. Wasn%26#39;t a bad experience, however.........the first night I reported that I couldn%26#39;t use the room safe, it wouldn%26#39;t open. It never got fixed in the 5 days we stayed there. Also, I used their consierge sevice to make our dinner reservations for our special dinner at Tidepools on our last night on the island. We arrived 10 minutes before our reservation and guess what?......they never heard of us. We had to settle for a late meal at Plantation Gardens instead. We%26#39;ll use Outrigger if we stay at KP again. Good Luck, Harry

Thanks for the tip. How was the room, cleanliness, noise, etc.?

    Van

The room was immaculate. It was a third floor (top) overlooking the cactus garden so noise wasn%26#39;t a problem.

I should say that we really love KP and it%26#39;s beautiful grounds. It is located on a wonderful beach and there are many attractions nearby. The onsite restaurant, Plantation Gardens, is one of our favorites.

My only problem was with Suite Paradise.

    Harry

What was the problem with Suite Paradise???

There was no problem with Suite Paradise. I was just asking about their accomodations at Kiahuna Plantation. I am eagerly awaiting my trip in a couple weeks and wanting to know if anyone booked through SP and what their experiences were.

  • Car rental near Lahaina

We will be staying at the Four Seasons Manele Bay in Lanai and planning a day trip to Maui via Expedition ferry. I was wondering if there is a car rental place near the dock.

    Car rental near Lahaina

I am not sure, but I bet if you asked Expedition ferry people, they could tell you. If not post this question also on the Maui forum and you are likely to get an answer. Have a great trip!

    Car rental near Lahaina

    Hello -

There aren%26#39;t car rental places right next to the ferry, but if you do dollar they are one of the closest and you can call them while you are on the ferry on your way over and they will pick you up.

I was just in process of reserving Dollar car rental. Do you know how far they are from Lahaina?

    Harley Drive in Maui

We are going to rent a Harley for one of the days we are in Maui. Would anyone recommend some nice places to ride to see the sites on a motorcycle? Of course we won%26#39;t do it on the Road to Hana.

    Harley Drive in Maui

i learned that one the hard way. the road to hana is too tight and slow moving for a motorcycle.

i too am renting a motorcycle...i know you can ride to/through the vineyards. i am interested in knowing the best routes as well.

    Harley Drive in Maui

When we ride with friends on Sundays, we start in Kihei and ride to Paia for breakfast at Charley%26#39;s. Then go to the Hookipa Lookout to see ocean/windsurfers/surfers. Next is a ride up Baldwin Ave %26amp; thru the town of Makawao. We stop at Rice Park in Kula for a break.

From there we head back thru Kahului thru the pali going towards Lahaina. This ride is excellent. Stop at Leilani%26#39;s for pupus or lunch.

After Leilani%26#39;s, we either go to Wailuku to see Iao Valley or we either go back to Kihei and make a few stops at the local bars.

This is probably confusing, but the ride takes up most of the day.

I have rented Harleys in the Islands and I own Harleys too.

But I had the most fun renting scooters by far!!

They%26#39;re a blast if your ego can take it.

Larger scooters go 60+, plenty fast for lookin%26#39; rnd

where do you rent you scooters??

i think if i got a bigger one that could go 60 i would feel better.

i%26#39;ve always rented the harley b/c i see the little scooters at full throttle on big roads getting passed by old ladies on walkers. i just would not feel safe going that slow on the big roads getting passed right and left by cars.

i don%26#39;t think i%26#39;m too cool...and this way, the mrs. can rent a scooter as well!!

    Kona for 4 days

Planning to go to Hawaii with the family with 2 kids age 5 and 8 this August. Staying in Oahu for 5 days and then flying to Kona for 4 days. Will be arriving on Kona at 4pm on first day and leaving at 8pm on the 4th day. Second day I figure to rent a car and head to Volcanoes. How long of a drive is it. What can I do on the 3rd and 4th days? Thanks.

    Kona for 4 days

Where are you actually staying? We just got back and we stayed at the Hilton. The pools were great for the kids and they had a lagoon that you could snorkel and little paddle boats for the littliest of children. We keep saying this would be a great place for children. They also have the dolphin quest and camps for the children. There are some nice beaches you could go to with kids but someone else could tell you better about that because we left our four little ones at home. I am not sure about how long it would take to get to Volcano because we stayed on Hilo side part of the time. I think it took us about 1 1/2 to just past Hilo and it is about 30 minutes from that point. But maybe someone more knowledgable than me could give you a better idea. Be sure and do the lava tube with the kids that was really neat.

    Kona for 4 days

First.. rent a car when you arrive in order to save a $30 to $50 cab ride.

from Kona, via 11 south, it takes me about 2.5 hours without stops and driving at or under the speed limit. My trip computor indicated I averaged 31 mph. there is a lot of slow driving and over half the trip is with 35mph speed limits. Leave Kona by 0600 and get to the park by 0900... to take advantage of the parks morning ranger led free walks and talks. return via 19. allow 4 hurs in the park min.

Day3.......go to the Hilton ,with the kids that age and buy a day pass $80. they and you wiill love it. Or take a boat tour to capt cook for a half day and visit palce of refuge. Or go to the rainforset in Hawi and take the kids on flume da ditch...

day4. do nothing, pack and relax....

Hey I am so impressed with myself, looks like me and the expert agree. I might have been a little off on the travel time but not bad for a guess. And he is sooooo right about the Hilton. The whole time we were there I keep saying the kids would love this.

    Delta/Pilots agree on tentative settlement

    Details:

    biz.yahoo.com/ap/060414/delta_pilots.html鈥?/a>

    Delta/Pilots agree on tentative settlement

But the pilots have yet to speak...

The labor leaders, recognizing the imminent demise of the company (and their as yet un-cut high paying consultant positions), may have agreed to the terms, but the rank and file has not.

Good news, but final by no means.

    Delta/Pilots agree on tentative settlement

I have a question that someone might know about delta miles, we have over the 35000 for a trip but for whenever we check it seems all they have is the 70000 tickets, has anyone gotten the 35000 with delta recently, I know they are always difficult to get but with american we can always get them if we book far enough in advance. I can hardly find anywhere that delta offers the base mileage, is this their game plan.

Longboard, they are indeed cutting back on the seats available at the lower mileage. I find I hit about 50-50 vs. the higher mileage. If you can travel during the week (Tue, Wed, Thu) you%26#39;ll have much better luck finding seats at the lower rate.

I agree amberloo, because the same is true here in Northwest Airlines land. Although there is a tentative contract between NWA and their pilots, it is still quite uncertain how the pilots will vote later this month (and same goes for the NWA flight attendants). So time will tell.

Oh golly, I hereby enter a no contest plea: the utilization of Delta (%26amp;/or Northwest) and the word tentative, in the same sentence, is undeniably redundant!

However, when it comes to the current situation, think what was announced is far preferable to tentative disagreement; at least as far as timing of a potential strike is concerned. No matter what transpires over the coming weeks and months, I doubt that any employee of Delta believes it will be the end of the Chinese Water Torture they%26#39;ve had to endure.

With regard to Skymiles, don%26#39;t know if of interest, but Delta has a fairly efficient system for donations to Charity. In addition to all the majors, it is an easy click for such groups as Childrens Miracle Network, Make-a-Wish and Special Olympics etc.

As far as the long term viability of Delta, once they clear Chapter 11, and are no longer ';burdened'; with past indebtedness, have dumped their Pension Plans off on the Pension Benefit Guarantee Corp. (taxpayers are the bag-holder on that little puppy) and have finalized their multitude of labor concessions, their operating costs per available seat mile will be lower than those of Southwest.

One final tidbit concerning the Pilot%26#39;s Union; shortly before bankrupcy, they could have acquired controlling interest in the company for the cost of a single 767. Admittedly, it would have not prevented bankrupcy, but at least they would have had the opportunity to install management of their choosing; at a price significantly lower than the latest round of concessions.

    Oops; Skymiles donations: delta.com/skymiles/鈥ndex.jsp

    Thanks for this, Kamaainawannabe

You%26#39;re welcome emeralds. From the commentary I%26#39;ve seen so far, the deal appears to be one the Pilots may, with a few tweaks, support.

Longer-term, the odds of Delta and Northwest merging seem to be high. This would produce the most comprehensive route system in the country; along with an extremely competitive cost structure. Northwest has, by far, the oldest fleet in the industry; they%26#39;ll probably use the provisions of Chapter 11 to break a large number of plane %26amp; gate leases and the combined company could further reduce the work-force by at least 20%.

From this point forward, it will be interesting to see what American and Continental do with their Pension Plans; don%26#39;t see how they can afford to maintain them and stay competitive. Also, Southwest is facing an unprecedented challenge: This mornings Wall Street Journal reports that the average compensation of LUV pilot, with 10 years experience is more than $180,000.

Under the proposed agreements, the comparable compensation for Delta Pilots will be $143,000 and $126,000 for Northwest.

    Very interesting indeed !

    Big Island Activities

My wife and I are all booked for our first trip to Kona, the first 2 weeks of May. We have booked a condo at Casa De Emdeko and have also booked a car. We are active travellers in our early 50%26#39;s who enjoy a variety of things. Our only drawback is that my wife has mobility problems. She can walk comfortably on flat terrain, and must rest often, but has problems on stairs or inclines. Can we see the sites at VPN or the Waterfalls without long hikes. What other things can you recommend for someone with mobility problems who wants to see as much as we can. Thanks for any assistance.

    Big Island Activities

Take a circle island tour that does a lot of short stops.... and the both of you can enjoy.. The walks in the park and waterfalls are I fear might be a bit too taxing from you description You could try, but take it slow Consider an air tour as well ,since it will show you the best with out taxing her.

    My Mom can%26#39;t walk much so we did lots of driving. We drove up North, stopped in Hawi (she loves little stores) and drove to the Polulu Valley Overlook. Took the Kohala Mountain Road to Waimea and visited the Parker Ranch Museum. Drove to the Waipio Valley Lookout. We stopped at the Laupahoehoe Train Museum on the way to Hilo and veered onto the Scenic Drive before going to Hilo. After the Tsunami Museum and Rainbow Falls we drove to Volcano, stopping at the Macadamia Nut Factory, Sharky%26#39;s Coffee Farm and Akatsuka Orchid Garden along the way. We spent the night at a B%26amp;B in Volcano and spent the morning in the VNP the next day. We drove back to Kona going South, stopping at the Volcano Winery, Punaluu Black Sand Beach, Punaluu Bakery, South Point and Place of Refuge.';

    Karateguy,

Are you flying into Kona? There isn’t a jetway there, and your wife will have to navigate the mobile stairs. If you are flying into Hilo there is a jetway and an elevator to get to the first floor. If you are flying into Kona, I believe if you contact your airline they can arrange a lift to help get passengers down w/o the stairs.

Once on the island so many of the waterfalls and viewpoints have trails that lead to them. Rainbow falls has a new long smooth ramp, but Akaka is about 1000 feet loop if I remember correctly, with some moderately steep decline/inclines and stairs. Waipio has a long sloping trail that can be walked if one takes it easy. HVNP has much hiking and much that can be viewed from the car.

I second the aerial tour, it will give your wife the most bang for the buck.

    Good luck and happy travels!

Thanks for all of your great suggestions. My wife will try and do almost anything, she hates to admit her limitations. What%26#39;s a good swimming beach and snorkle beach close to our condo.

I%26#39;m thinking that Kaanapali is about 50 minutes from the airport, and Pukalani is about 15 minutes from the airport, so the drive from Pukalani to Kaanapali would take a little over an hour.

Hi. I%26#39;ve compiled lots of ';stuff'; from readings on our Board. Check out the map at:

    Paging HawaiiDan and Typically Tropical

We will be staying at the Magic Sands for a week next January 07. Some friends (2 couples) are going to meet up with us for 3 days after they get off a cruise of the islands but don%26#39;t want to stay in condos. What are 2 or 3 nice hotels that are fairly close to the Magic Sands? They will want 4 or 5 star accommodations, oceanfront rooms with really nice grounds, pool, etc. We will be picking them up in our rental vehicle and showing them around so we don%26#39;t want to travel very far and have to deal with traffic just to go pick them up. Thanks for any help you can give.

    Paging HawaiiDan and Typically Tropical

Gosh, I wish all questions were this easy! There is only one choice: Sheraton Keauhou Bay Resort %26amp; Spa. Another hotel close by is the Outrigger Keauhou Bay Resort but it%26#39;s more like a three star hotel.

    Paging HawaiiDan and Typically Tropical

The Outrigger is one mile south...And is like a bestwestern... however it has a good bar, luau, and restauraunt. It is a good quality place figure around $200 a night in jan. It has the advantage of being on Kahalulu bay, which is a very good place to swim, surf and snorkel... no coral but lots of fish and calm waters.

Sheraton just got 80 million into their place, has one of the best bars in kona..if not Hawaii... Blue Crystal where you can sit and watch mantas at night. Kai there is an excellent dining place and they have one of the top luaus here. It sits on a rocky point overlooking Keauhou bay and has the second best pool on the island with a huge waterside.....Figure around $260 a night in Jan. It is 3 miles south of your condo.

Magic Sands has its own restauraunt Jamesons which ok food for high prices, Its owner prides himself thet he has not changet the menu in 40 years.....

    as a note.....Sheraton a 4 star in my book Outrigger a 2.8 star.

All the 4 star and 5 star are in Kohala

    Four seasons 5+ star

    Kona Village 4.8 star

    Marriott 4 star..

    Hilton 4.5 star

    Mauna Lani..4.5

    Fairmont 4.5

    Mauna Kea 4.8

    Hapuna 4.3

these are my opinions of each

Thanks, guys. You both are the greatest and I feel blessed to have you to turn to for questions. We love the Magic Sands, but hardly ever eat at Jamesons. We usually just cook out on the grill and enjoy the wonderful sunsets by the pool area. I%26#39;ll pass on to our friends your recommendations.

    Hawaii Travel 2006

My husband and I are about your age. We are active travelers as well and have visited Oahu, and the Big Island many times. I%26#39;ll tell you up front, we don%26#39;t do luaus (unless a friend or relative is having one), we don%26#39;t do expensive ';tours';, and we don%26#39;t eat in expensive restaurants unless it%26#39;s a special occasion. But we do have a lot of fun.

My husband was born/raised on Oahu. We prefer to stay at the eastern end of Waikiki, away from the crowds of the central area. That area is way too ';touristy'; for us, including Waikiki Beach and the International Marketplace, and we avoid this area at all costs. We%26#39;re kind of picky about where we stay, and we%26#39;ve found some really nice accomodations for under $200/night. The Hawaii Prince Hotel is one of our favorite places to stay. It%26#39;s a quiet, elegant hotel with all rooms overlooking the marina. This year we%26#39;ve booked a condo at the Ilikai Marina building next door(not to be confused with the Renaissance Ilikai Hotel). If you%26#39;re looking for a bit more space with a full kitchen and separate bedroom, a condo can be a good option for less money than you%26#39;d spend on a hotel room. The Ala Moana Mall is across the street from this area and offers decent shopping, a nice food court, and a grocery store. There are many great restaurants in Honolulu- check out the dining section on this forum for recommendations by other members. One of our favorite local-style places to eat in Honolulu is the Side Street Inn. The best bakery is Leonard%26#39;s, without a doubt. As far as evening entertainment goes, there are many hotels and restaurants offering excellent Hawaiian music performed by local musicians. Chai%26#39;s Island Bistro and Hilton Hawaiian Village are two places where we%26#39;ve heard some really good music. It will only cost you the price of a couple of drinks and a tip to the performers.

Our favorite places to visit in Honolulu-

USS Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbor

Chinatown- love everything about it- the food, the shopping, the culture.

    Doris Duke%26#39;s Shangri-La

    Queen Emma%26#39;s Summer Palace

    Bishop Museum

Drive outside Honolulu toward the windward side and watch Oahu transform into an incredibly beautiful island. No planned tours for us. We just get in the car and drive. Pop some good Hawaiian music in the CD player and hele on. Bring a good guidebook along with you and stop along you way at whatever appeals to you. Kailua and Lanikai beaches on the windward side are gorgeous. Kaneohe Bay is stunning. Head toward the north shore and watch the surfers catch the big waves. Eat lunch at a shrimp truck and have a shave ice for dessert.

These are just a few of my favorite things to do on Oahu. There are many more places to see and things to do. If you think what I%26#39;ve suggested might suit your style, let me know and I%26#39;ll tell you what we like on the Big Island.:)

Can you answer this crazy restaurant question???

About five years ago my family visited Oahu. We went to a restaurant that we absolutely loved, but the only problem is that we have no idea what it is called or where it%26#39;s at. Here%26#39;s what we remember:

-The outside of the building was yellow

-The decor on the inside was very bright.

    -My Mom said that her steak was excellent and was served with the ';purple potatoes';

-We stayed at the Marriott in Waikiki and we know that the restaurant was somewhat towards Diamond Head or east of Waikiki.

Thanks for any info on this!!!!! :)

Can you answer this crazy restaurant question???

    roxanne,

what kind of ';bright'; was it?

If it was bright light, perhaps Sam Choy%26#39;s? It%26#39;s east of Waikiki, serves okinawan potatoes, but I can%26#39;t remember the color of the building.

Was it a standalone restaurant, or were there other shops or whatnot attached?

Can you answer this crazy restaurant question???

She may also be referring to the former Caf茅 Monsarrat, which is now Tavola Tavola at 3106 Monsarrat Ave. Was the restaurant on a hillside next to Diamond Head crater?

I forgot all about that place! It was great! And it sounds much more like the description.

    Thanks for the info!!!

I have no idea if Cafe was even the place. I%26#39;ve been searching for pictures of the place, but I guess since it%26#39;s been replaced, there%26#39;s no point.

By bright decor I mean that the inside was painted with bright colors.

    how's the lobster on Maui?

The most tender, sweetest lobster I ever had was a ';mexican lobster'; in cancun. How do you think maui%26#39;s lobsters rate? Is there a particular restaurant to go to for the best lobster dinner on Maui?

    how's the lobster on Maui?

We ordered lobster on our last night (room service - Wailea Marriott) and it was delicious.Comparable to the lobster we ate in the US Virgin Islands.

    how's the lobster on Maui?

better yet how much is the lobster in maui?

The dish my husband had was lobster tail and petit filet mignon and it was $45.

Going to Cabo in July and I now plan to try some ';mexican lobster';, sound so good!

I had the best lobster i%26#39;ve ever had in my life at Humuhumu last summer - one of the biggest tails i%26#39;d ever been served too! Came with a filet mignon that was also spectacular, as was the lobster bisque and the chocolate lava cake. Everything was cooked perfectly, nothing has lived up to it since.

Also tried lobster at Pacific Grill at the Four Seasons, also very good. They even had mashed potatoes with chunks of lobster in them.

I think the lobster at both restaurants was in the high $40%26#39;s to $50%26#39;s range, it%26#39;s been a while so I can%26#39;t remember exact prices. I could be way off. I know I thought it was reasonable because we pay $65+ for lobster %26amp; filet mignon at our favorite restaurant here in California. I%26#39;m sure you%26#39;ll pay by the pound at some restaurants in Maui and it will be much more costly. It%26#39;s vacation - splurge!

We usually spent $150+ for 2 people for dinner without alcohol - usually 1 appetizer, 1 soup or salad, 2 entrees and 1 dessert. We couldn%26#39;t believe how much we spent on meals for our family of 4 for the week, it%26#39;s insane when you think about it!

I am drooling!!!! Can%26#39;t wait to try these places. Havent been to any of the ones suggested. I was surprised no one mentioned nicks. (Haven%26#39;t been there either) The review posts are not as favorable as the forum posts seem to be. In fact some of the reviews were horrible. Oh well, I feel lucky to be able to find out for myself!

We were very pleasantly surprised that room service lobster was so good (hubby needed pampering after whole week of rain and virtually no pool/beach time)

Next time, will try lobster in restaurant, although still a little scared of %26#39;market price%26#39;.

I wanted to try the lobster at Nick%26#39;s but had had lobster the night before at Humuhumu. Got Opakapaka (?) fish at Nick%26#39;s that was amazing, also try the crab cakes if you like them - very good! The service there is top notch too - great waiters!

i just looked up some of the restaurants recommended and was surprised to read maine, spiny, and pacific lobster on the menus. I%26#39;m not familiar with spiny and wonder where exactly in the pacific these ';pacific'; lobsters are from. I%26#39;d like to try locally caught lobsters and not something i can get right here in chicago. I was really hoping I%26#39;d read ';hawaiian or ';';maui'; lobster on the menu. Can anyone help?

spiny lobster can be locally caught. The other commercial lobster in Hawaii is the slipper lobster which is pretty small compared to Maine or Spiny lobsters.

The local spiny%26#39;s are great! They don%26#39;t have any claws so are quite different from the Maine lobsters. All the meat is in the tails and they are thick and sweet with great textured meat. If you are a lobster lover you have to try.

    Flights from Maui

Do all the flights from Maui leave in the afternoon, and fly thru the night?

    Flights from Maui

Bunibleu, Our flight leaves about 12:30 in afternoon and gets to LAX at about 9:30pm. Other than the west coast airports the planes have to land during the Airport%26#39;s hours of operation so I guess it depends on where you are lying to.

    T

    Flights from Maui

Check that- I mean that the Airports on the West coast are close enough for a early afternoon and before flight to arrive before the airport in question closes for the night.

    T

twice we have taken a later flight out of maui that flew to lax and then we caught another to chicago. I can%26#39;t recall when exactly but i believe it was 8 or 9 at night. My husband made our reservations this year instead of me, and booked us on an early afternoon non-stop flight to chgo and I%26#39;m trying very hard not to complain about it. I%26#39;d much rather have another full day of maui, and then sleep all the way home. tylenol pm is your friend.

  • Hale Koa luau, Oahu

Has anyone been to the Hale Koa luau at

the Hale Koa resort? We%26#39;re trying to

decide which to go to while on Oahu.

We%26#39;ll be going to Horizons show at PCC, but

thought about trying somewhere else for the

    luau. Thanks!

    Hale Koa luau, Oahu

Are you military and going before May 31st? We are going to be staying at the Hale Koa in a week and decided to combine the luau and show at PCC instead of doing the luau at Hale Koa. Main reason is that the PCC is running a military appreciation special through May 31. The military member gets in free with anyone buying a ticket. We are stopping by the base to get the Ali Luau package for $64 (mil discount) and my husband gets in free! So we both get to do the luau and see Horizon show all for $64.00. It is about $32 pp for Hale Koa Luau. I did go to the PCC luau a few years ago and enjoyed it. I spoke to the Hale Koa and they said some seating is covered and some isn%26#39;t. It could get rained on and only those people with covered seats stay dry. I had also read that some of the views were blocked by poles. The PCC is covered. Hope that helps!

    Hale Koa luau, Oahu

    Thanks Lvtolvlife! Your information was

helpful. Sorry we won%26#39;t be able to take

advantage of the PCC offer, as we will not

arrive until June 12. We are staying at

the Hale Koa for 4 nights and at Bellows

for 5 nights. Have any advice? It is our

    first trip to Hawaii.

  • ';Borrow your pool?';

Are there any hotels/resorts on the beach that you can enter to buy drinks and ';borrow their pool for a couple of minutes'; without causing any problems or creating a scene. We are not staying on the beach in Oahu and would love to have a few beach side drinks etc etc...

    Thanks for your info

    ';Borrow your pool?';

waikiki is not your typical resorts with the megapools, pools are smaller and bars are welcome to everyone, down the line moana, dukes at the outrigger, mai tai bar at the royal, sheraton , halekulani, hhv are all exceptional for cocktailing it oceanside. For pure beach side enjoyment the moana is hard to beat.

    Spago's Kamaaina Deal? Pathertic Reviews?

An incoming visitor wants me to take her to Spago%26#39;s, anybody know what the Kamaaina Deal is there? I hear 50% off? What%26#39;s with the pathetic reviews for Spago%26#39;s on this board...real or imagined?

    Thanks,

    J

    Spago's Kamaaina Deal? Pathertic Reviews?

Oh it%26#39;s real my friend -

My husband and I and another couple went to Spago last July while staying at the Four Seasons. We were in Maui for a week and Spago was the worst meal we had, i%26#39;ll go even further and say it was the worst meal i%26#39;ve ever had.

We each ordered a different dish, none of us were happy with the taste or the presentation of our meals, nothing was really warm, I think it had been sitting for a while. Mine was a fish dish, Uku (?), it was a small piece of dry fish on top of some grilled (under cooked) onions topped with a ';spicy thai sauce';. This spicy thai sauce tasted like a bottled bbq sauce that you could get in a grocery store - it was disgusting. I scraped off the sauce and still only ate a few bites of the dry fish.

I will say that the crab cake appetizer was good although it was extremely small, roughly the size of a half-dollar at a cost of $13 for one crab cake.

Dessert was also horrible. We all ordered pineapple upside-down cake the description on the menu made it sound so good - it was terrible. The sauce was burnt and the cake was soaked in liquor that wasn%26#39;t mentioned on the menu - it was inedible.

The wait staff is also very stuffy, service was very slow too. I asked for a non-alcoholic tropical drink and was told it couldn%26#39;t be done !????

So after spending over $150 on a meal for 2 my husband and I left Spago hungry - no joke!

The menu at Spago apparently changes frequently, the night we were there it was very limited - I found it very hard to decided on an entree, nothing sounded appetizing. There is a menu posted outside of Spago just off the lobby of the Four Seasons, check the menu before your reservations!

If you must go to Spago, I say go for appetizers and drinks only then on to another restaurant for dinner.

We also ate at Humuhumu, Nick%26#39;s, Mama%26#39;s, Tommy Bahama%26#39;s, etc. Would highly recommend every other restaurant that we dined at.

What do you think about this itenary?

We are leaving in June for 6 nights at the HHV.

Fri.- Arrive late afternoon. Check in, eat, watch the fireworks at the hotel and go to bed early.

    Sat.- Pearl Harbor

    Sun. Hanauma Bay

    Mon. Drive to North Shore

    Tues. Drive around some more

    Wed. Hike Diamond Head

Thurs. Check out and hang around pool all day. Go home

This is just a general itenary. We plan on seeing alot of things on Dusty%26#39;s list but don%26#39;t want to be overbooked. We want to leave plenty of time to relax and enjoy the beach! So what do you think???

What do you think about this itenary?

    Oops...I misspelled itinerary

What do you think about this itenary?

I like the pace it makes it so much more enjoyable if I don%26#39;t feel rushed. The only part I had trouble with is the second part on Thursday. Aloha and enjoy

Looks good, maybe a little heavy on the driving around?

What about seeing some Hawaiian history stuff, maybe Sat or Sun afternoon?

There are several buildings clustered by downtown - Iolani Place, Mission Houses Museum. If nothing else, you could wander around the area (very pretty) and wander down to Chinatown also. Chinatown goes off on the weekends. That same area is also walking distance (all w/in the same maybe 10 blocks) of Aloha Tower, which is on the water %26amp; a good place to have lunch if you didn%26#39;t want to eat in Chinatown.

Bishop Museum is a fantastic way to get oriented to Hawaiian history, and a pleasurable way to spend a little time.

The Waikiki Aquarium is small but very good, and might fit well as a walk after Diamond Head. It has a lot of Hawaii-specific information %26amp; exhibits.

Also good for one of your evenings to relax after all that driving might be walking down to the free sunset hula shows at Kuhio Beach -torch lighting, music, hula.

Maybe House Without a Key for Sunset one evening, or go to a Pacific Rim restaurant, since it originated in Hawaii.

Where%26#39;s Kuhio Beach? Is it close Kailua where we are staying? I love anything that%26#39;s free! :-)

It%26#39;s between Queen%26#39;s Beach and the Moana Surfrider across Kalakaua from the Waikiki circle. We%26#39;ve found the show to be a great way to meet people from all over the world besides the music and dance. There is also a show in the IMP food court.

    snorkeling gloves

    Hello all

I%26#39;ve never snorkeled off an island made entirely of lava. Someone suggested I purchase diving gloves. Any thoughts?

    Cheers

    L

    snorkeling gloves

I%26#39;d imagine as long as you%26#39;re not touching things (which you shouldn%26#39;t be anyawy) you%26#39;ll be fine without?

    snorkeling gloves

You shouldn%26#39;t need them but if you think you do you can either buy real dive gloves from a dive shop, or you can also buy fishing gloves from many places that sell fishing tackle, including places like CTC or Wal Mart. Fishing gloves are similar and cheaper.

    Lar, Aloha

Rearding dive gloves. Indeed, the other posters are absolutely correct, You are not supposed to be touching anything, fish, or coral.

However, things dont always turn out as planned, and a swell or current can sweep you into coral. Using your bare hands to fend off is NOT a good idea.

We have snorkeled on many visits ( actually skippering sailing vessels ) from the Bahamas, British virgin islands, French West Indies, and the Windwards and Grenadines, as well as the Tahitian Islands, the Kingdom of Tonga, And recently the Australian Whitsunday Islands, and did a wonderful adventure on the SPIRIT OF FREEDOM ( live aboard dive boat )on the great barrier reef and the coral sea.

My point being, we do have some experience snorkeling and diving other sites as well as the Hawaiian Islands, and do suggest gloves.

If you wish, you can pick up some dive gloves from a mainland dive shop. Better safe than sorry with coral cuts that will have living organisms festering for quite a long time.

Sometimes, it might take a gentle push off coral or rocks, to avoid more than just cuts on your hands, but on other parts of the body.

We always try to plan ahead, and stay clear of coral, or rocks, but mother nature might just surprise you.

Your choice, of course, but a little added protection is not a bad idea.

Best condo to stay in West Maui I'm confused!

I have searched and searched on the internet for days and read alot on this forum, maybe too much. I just hate to pay $4000 a week for a two bedroom condo and have it look like hotel 8 or have no beach front! Can anybody help me?

Best condo to stay in West Maui I'm confused!

Try vrbo.com. You can find so many 2bd/2ba condos on the water for 200-350. When you find something you think you will like, read the tourist reviews here and on other sites. You will be looking at the exact condo you will be in.

Best condo to stay in West Maui I'm confused!

thanks I visted that site early on, so I will go back and revisit. Can%26#39;t wait to go we go in early May.

Hi. If you are budgeting $4,000 a week for your lodging you can bargain big time! But start today. Have you booked your airline yet? Assuming you have, then you have no need for ';bundled'; programs, so shop the many links provided right here for condos! I think you should start with The Whaler.

    Enjoy!

Check out www.kahanaoasis.com We are going in June!!!!!!

There are three properties I would recommend. The Kaanapali Alii, The Whaler and the Mahana. Both the Alii and teh Whaler are right on Kaanapali Beach but they are pretty big facilities. The Whaler has about 360 apartments almost all with great views. The Alii has 264. Some of the units have great views some do not. Both facilities are busy which means if you want a seat at the pool you have to get there early. You can check out availability at vrbo.com. There are a number of owners who rent direct.

The Mahana has 215 apartments in two buildings that all face the ocean. It%26#39;s on Kaanapali beach but North of black rock so it%26#39;s a little bit away from main beach.

I counted six listings for the Alii, twelve for the Whaler and twelve for the Mahana on VRBO.

You can check out the interiors for some of these at whalersrealty.com

Best on Kaanapili Beach is The Whaler. In the middle of all the action and next door to The Whalers Shopping Center.

Many owners rent direct, depending on time of year it can be a savings. I agree go to www.vrbo.com and rent direct from owner, visit there web site for full details what there condo offers.

I think you should be avle to rent a 2 bedroom unit for under $400.oo per day.

Thanks so much for all of ya%26#39;lls advice. Can tell I%26#39;m from the south! I have booked my airfare. I was looking seriously at the Kaanapali Alii condo%26#39;s, but read some bad reviews. After reading another forum, several people mentioned that you should stay in Napli or Kahana to miss alot of the congestion. They said there is still real pretty beaches there and you are close enough to the action. Has anyone heard anything good about Napli Sunset, Makena Surf, Puunoa Beach Estates, or the Outrigger Kahana? Well I%26#39;m back to searching.

Our first choice was Napili, but nothing on the water held 5. We are staying in the Kahana area next week. If you give me your e-mail, I%26#39;ll advise once we%26#39;re there. I%26#39;m from Chattanooga, but imported from St. Louis. I agree with other posters about the Whaler and Mahana. Both look good.

I just finished viewing every 2 bedroom condos in vrbo. Not many are available for May. Please let me know all about your trip and the place you are staying. We are going May 7th to celebrate my oldest daughters college graduation and our 25th anniversary and of course my youngest daugther gets to go also. Email me at jmcmanus@midsouth.rr.com.

Vrbo 64791 and 18866 are both available then.64791 was one of our final choices, the other was booked.

We also liked 21861, but it was booked. The couple who own it are awesome--she e-mailed me about 5 people she knows who rent at the Papakea. (Sorry I already deleted it). Papakea gets mixed reviews, but I%26#39;m guessing the bad ones are rented through ResortQuest.

It is next to a swimming beach at Kaanapali Shores. Many are 1bd/1ba with loft as second bedroom.

These are at the Lokelani. The 2bd/2ba are townhouses with lanais at both levels. I liked them but by the time they got back to me, I had booked elsewhere. vrbo 20850,66147, and 10239. There are others there but they were booked our week and I did not write them down.

The last 2 on my list are at the Hololini, 64791(available) and 77882. I called Larry who owns 77882. He seemed very nice.

    You might also try Chasenrainbows.com.

The place we are staying is booked that week. We had booked a place in January and read conflicting reports. We decided to change 11 days prior to arriving. I e-mailed all I was interested in who did not have calendar. There were at least 10 who could book then; some even had last minute specials.

Another option is the Entertainment Book. ResortQuest and Outrigger have half price rooms at all their resorts. Be careful though because the room we booked first through them would have no view because of the discount. If view is important, be sure to ask.

I%26#39;m sure you%26#39;ll find something you love. Have a great trip.

  • Signature Kilohana rooms at Fairmont Kea Lani - worth extra...

I need to hear from anyone who has stayed in one of the Signature Kilohana rooms (1,100 sq. ft) at the Fairmont Kea Lani in Maui. Is it truly worth the extra $$? My husband and I have stayed in one of the other suites that was 840 sq ft 2 years ago and are looking into going back to the Kea Lani this fall with a third person. We LOVED the Kea Lani 2 years ago...we were just thinking about upgrading to a larger room this time. The difference in the room charge per night; however, is pretty steep! Opinions, anyone? Thanks!

Signature Kilohana rooms at Fairmont Kea Lani - worth extra...

    Sweethome -

We were just at the Kea Lani last week with a large group. We were in a newly renovated suite that had a partial ocean view and we thought it was beautiful. One of the other couples in our group spent the money to upgrade to the Kilohana room. I liked the layout of the room, the extra space was nice and the view was definitely great. Hands down, the suite really is special. However, I still wouldn%26#39;t spend the extra money. I%26#39;d much rather take that same money and visit the spa each day, go to Nick%26#39;s more than once, or rent a cabana by the pool. To me, those are the things that really make the difference in the trip. But everyone is different!!

    Feast at lele

We went to Old Lahaina Luau last year and want to try something different on this visit.

We loved our experience at OLL, but think the fire thing would be neat also. We will also be bringing my parents with us so I want to give them a good show also.

Why is Feast at lele more expensive than OLL?

    Thanks for the help!

    Feast at lele

i have a feeling it has to do with the food. the feast at lele is a better quality food with 5 courses. if i%26#39;m not mistaken, it is all prepared by pacifico%26#39;s restaurant.

i am going to feast at lele for the first time this may. i can let you know more later!!

    Feast at lele

I believe it%26#39;s more expensive because you get your own table and you are served at your table. I was really disappointed I had to cancel recently due to the rain.

We went last June--you will love it! If you can book as early as possible, you will have a good chance of having a table up front--it was the best and the food/drinks wonderful!

    Have fun!

Book early! We booked 5 months in advance for Oct.05. We got a front row table with a beautiful view of the sunset. This was a fabulous experience and I%26#39;m sure your folks will enjoy it. Table service, great drinks, good food. What%26#39;s not to like?

    Haleakala with little kids?

We are planning a day trip to Haleakala during our stay on Maui. Any advice on bringing little kids to the ';upcountry';? I%26#39;ve never done high altitude drive/hike with little ones... Do we really need to consult our docs before our trip (like they say on NPS website)???

    Haleakala with little kids?

    Hello Auntym!

Although everyone will react differently to the altitude change, we did not notice any difference in the car ride up Mt. Haleakala. We noticed it when we parked in the lot and walked up the steps to the lookout. Once at the top we were all fine. Now depending on how much walking you will have to do is another matter. We left by 230am from our hotel in Kaanapali and were at the summit in the parking lot prior to the masses. We got a great parking spot right in front of the steps...so we did not have to walk much, but those arriving closer to sunrise had to park some distance away and walk more. So if you are arriving for the sunrise, arrive early....it gets crowded plus we avoided the $10 park entrance fee! Could be higher now, but in my opinion there is no other reason to go up to the summit unless you are going for the sunrise. Just my personal view. And believe others when they say it is cold.....it is! If your children are too young to appreciate the Mt. Haleakala summit at daybreak then I might plan on another activity that they too can enjoy. We have been to Maui serval times with our kids at different ages and chose our activities based on their likes, because what would be worse than a kid not being where they want to be or saying, I%26#39;m bored when are we leaving.....Hope it helps....I offered more than you asked for sorry!

    Haleakala with little kids?

    Hi Kell82,

Thanks for your feedback - was very helpful:) We weren%26#39;t thinking of the sunrise drive, but now you got me thinking about the loooooong drive. Our kids are 6 and 18mos and they might not really enjoy this drive. I was hoping there were more family-friendly stops (i.e., vista points, visitor centers, etc.). Hm... maybe we should just save Haleakala for our next grown-ups-only adventure?! (and spend more time on the beaches this time?)

we took our then 4 year old to the summit,(he%26#39;s asthmatic..no probs what so ever) not for the sunrise though. He was real interested in the cow pies along the road :(

not so much the summit. As a matter of fact, after we looked over the lookout, he tripped and fell, barking his knees on the parking lot. He then told all within yelling distance that he hated this stupid mountain....I would wait a little bit...

Auntym.......Here are some suggestions that might interest you instead of staying on the beach your whole trip. There is so much more, even with little ones......How bout the Trilogy excursion to Lanai. Once there you can snorkel....take turns snorkeling with your 6 year old....while the other relaxes on the beach of Lanai with the little one....they treat you to a wonderful beach meal also.....still the beach but so much more, plus the ride on the catamaran to Lanai! Also I would recommend the Luau in Old Lahaina. If you make reservations you can choose from traditional seating (on the ground) or table and chairs. Both kids might really enjoy the show!

I would be a little hesitant to take kids on that day trip, not so much because of the altitude, although it is definitely a factor, but because I am afraid that they might get bored. Also, I am not sure if there are bathrooms at the summit. I know that if there are, they are not open at sunrise because our tour guide stopped at one of the ranger stations before we reached the summit and warned us that this was the ';last call'; for restrooms before proceeding further. Having had small childen, I know this can be an issue.

An alternate activity that you might consider is the Maui Ocean Center. It would be a wonderful place to keep the little ones entertained for an afternoon. Also, I noticed that the beaches in Kihea had lots of playground equipment. So a day at the beach might be fun for the little ones and you too.

    Thanks everyone!

Now I%26#39;m looking into excursions to Lanai/Molokini, Maui Ocean Center, luau, etc. (we%26#39;ll never get bored, I%26#39;m sure!)

Trilogy trips seem a little over our budget... any experience with Pacific Whale Foundation excursions? I checked out both forums (Trilogy and PWF), but I%26#39;m wondering if anyone had experiences with both of them. Any feedback would be appreciated! (Oops - I should probably post this on another forum?)

    Need help with ITINARARY

Will be there may 1 thru 5 (5days)

Your advice would be much appriciated.

    Need help with ITINARARY

Hi. Been developing a plan myself so I can share some thoughts I have had so far with you, and I change my mind and thus my plan almost every day that I read someone%26#39;s trip report!

Day 1 in Oahu- arrive from Maui at 10AM, check-in, then take off in rental and do North Shore Drive. This ';tour'; takes 3.5 hours and is decribed here in case you are interested: www.alternative-hawaii.com/drives/oahu/ns.htm

We plan on doing lunch and sunset and cocktails and dinner on the road. Return to Waikiki and ';crash'; at Royal Hawaiian. Maybe 1 little stroll on the beach before bedtime!

Day 2- Hike Diamond Head Trail early then drive to Koko Head for hike after lunch at a roadside truck. Dinner plans undecided so far but probably see how we feel after the Koko hike! Got info about this and other hikes here: portaloha.com/SecretsOfHawaii/RoundTop.htm

Day 3- Oahu triple play day- bike, hike, and sail/snorkel for me while wife stays at resort and does girl tourist stuff. Info on my activity is at www.hawaiiactive.com/adventures. Price is $144.00 pp (ouch!). Price includes lunch and transportation. I should return by 6PM. Dinner in town, so far undecided.

Day 4- Kualoa Ranch ATV Ride and Kayak Combo, 9 hours, $139.00 pp (double ouch!). Info on this is also at hawaiiactive. I am not a shareholder! LOL! Return at 4:30PM and do dinner late after cocktails at undecided bar for sunset.

Day 5,6,7- Ali Kai Dinner Cruise and Stars and Stripes Tour and Magic of Polynesia Cocktail Show and something else offered as Combo Package for $186.46 pp (yipes!) The catch for this activity is that you gotta do the activities over a 3 day period or you waste your money. So we will schedule appropriately to fit it all in.

Departure Flight leaves at 5:35 PM on Day 7. As mentioned, I change my mind on this plan every time someone else posts about what a great meal they had or hike or bike or some other great activity that they enjoyed while vacationing in Oahu.

It%26#39;s my 1st trip, can U tell! LOL!

    Need help with ITINARARY

That%26#39;s not very nice or helpful, do you think?

sounds like too much driving, I would swing around to the north shore after the kayaking instead of a separate trip, if you are staying at the royal hawaiian might consider the monday night luau - I would do that over you dinner cruise choice, I would be sure to get dinner reservations before you arrival, dukes, hula grill, orchids are good places that take reservations. The best thing about the royal hawaiian is that you get the pink umbrellas on the beach, you need to reserve them the afternoon before at the pool stand. The mai tai bar at the royal is an excellent place for cocktails and late night music. The halekulani is also a good place for sunset cocktails and music.

Hey, longboard, thanks for those tips. I%26#39;ll be posting the entire version 1 for criticism and comment soon, so please look for it and jump all over it with more ideas!

BTW, U think that this wgtatravel person is for real? He/she has posted the exact same question on every one of the Hawaiian island boards!

He/she is either planning 1 hell of a vacation or is trolling for names of places as some sort of marketing thingy for TripAdvisor, IMHO!

We got a copy of 101 things to do in Hawaii then along with our friends and family plus what we found on internet we couldn%26#39;t sleep. There%26#39;s too much to do in such a short time so we decided to pick what we really wanted to see and do. If you have kids with you I think that would change things some but not totally.

Sorry I almost forgot May 1 is Lei Day and depending when you get in what events you maybe able to catch. We arrive April 29 and leave May 4.

    Traffic

I know the traffic in Honolulu is bad, but can someone pin point the hours of the worst of it in the morning and afternoon/evening? I am from Los Angeles area and I know traffic, but would like to try to avoid being on the road at the worst of it, if possible.

    Traffic

    debi,

I see you post in the Kapolei forum so am assuming you are travelling to/from the Leeward side. I hate sitting in traffic and actually plan my errands/appts around it.

The worst traffic is in the a.m is INTO Honolulu. Rush hour starts approx. 5 a.m. and can last until 9. Usually lets up around 8 or 830. From Honolulu (%26amp; back to the Leeward side) rush hour starts around 3pm and lasts until 6 or 7pm. If there is an accident on the H-1, it could double or triple your commute time.

I live out on the Leeward side so if you need more traffic info, or clarification, let me know.

No. I%26#39;m not. What makes you ask?

just the nickname of a police officer as a fuzz. my son is one and i just thought you might be...sorry if i offended you in any way. thanks for your help!

    marinemom,

I%26#39;m not offended at all...just curious. Especially since you aren%26#39;t the first to ask!!!

    Regards,

    mrsfuzz

You know I could never relate %26#39;The Fuzz%26#39; with the police. Never got it.

Anyway, I live out in Ewa Beach and the traffic can be horrendous. The rush hours are pretty much correct as MsFuzz(?) pointed out. We usually leave our house at 7:45 am so we can safely make it into the zipper lane by it%26#39;s 8:30 closing time. Zipperlane is for two or more occupants in a vehicle. For the most part we make it into the downtown area by 8:30. If we left our house anytime between 5:30 (or maybe even earlier) and 7:30 it would be useless for us because the zipper lane is just as slow as the regular freeway. My son also works in town and leaves the house at 5 and gets into town by 5:45.

Going to work is a breeze compared to coming home. On a good day we%26#39;ll leave the downtown area at 5 and get home just after 6. Just to get to Ewa Beach from any off ramp after the H1/H2 split is murder. However, you should have no problem getting to Ko Olina. Sometimes the traffic getting into Nanakuli, which is after Ko Olina, does back up to your exit to Ko Olina. Oh, and traffic starts getting thick around 3 or 3:30.

We usually watch the morning news to see how the traffic is and we check out the traffic cams before we go home.

  • Carry-on Food Ideas

It%26#39;s a long flight to Hawaii.

What do you bring to eat that gets through security checks? Something that tastes great after a few hours in overhead storage?

Can we bring drinks in cans or glass bottles these days?

Just curious on what everyone else brings.

    Carry-on Food Ideas

I was thinking of doing the same thing. I hat waiting for the food and drinks on long flights.

Not sure about it tasting great, but if you take along some cup o%26#39;noodles you can ask the flight attendant for some hot water during the flight.

    Carry-on Food Ideas

As the wise Homer would say:

    ';DOH!!!!!!!!';

I meant to say that I ';hate'; waiting. I am sure all you smart folk out there figured that one out though!

We have 16 hours of travel time next week (2 stops all the way from the East Coast). Here is what I plan to bring for a family of 4:

    Quaker Caramel Rice Cakes

    Pretzels

    Chex Mix

Mini cereal boxes (Froot Loops, etc.)

    Granola bars

    Pop-Tarts

1 large bottle of water each (I will buy more on each layover)

    Cold Pizza in ziploc bags

Easter Candy (we leave next day)

    Gum

Also, I am thinking of taking 2 smaller bottles of water, freezing them, and putting them in a soft side cooler to keep yogurt and sandwiches cold. Once the water melts, it will be perfect to drink!

Cold Pizza in baggies goes on the list! Great ideas.

I%26#39;m asking because our flight is ';Food for Purchase';. We had to ditch HA this year because we wanted to leave in the evening after dinner. I was so tired of waking up in the morning and rushing around to make the Hawaiian Airlines flight in the middle of another sunny day in Hawaii. We%26#39;ll sleep the flight away going back this time. I%26#39;ll miss the drive-thru check though.

Do you all know if you are allowed to bring those mini bottles of Alcohol on the flights? I know we%26#39;ll want to have a few drinks and it%26#39;s so expensive on the flight so we thought about bringing a few of our own. I just wasn%26#39;t sure if we would be allowed!

    Thanks

    Man Hangdog,

gr8 ideas! I can tell you ar an experienced mom...er...dad???? I dunno, but good ideas anyway. You forgot the mustard, though.

We also take some sort of breath fresheners, mints etc..mouth gets might sour after a long flight....

    wendy 1212..

if you bring those mini bottles on the flight, use them discreetly..10 minutes in the naughty chair if you get busted with them..... seriously, the answer is no, you are only allowed to consume alcohol you purchase from the stewards and stewardesses...

We bring cold cut sandwiches packed in a small collapsible insulated cooler with one of those frozen ice pack things inside. Also pack fruit, nuts, sliced cheese and crackers as well. We%26#39;re also thinking of bringing along a few small bottles of wine- cheaper than paying $5 for the ones on the plane. On the way back, we bring sushi from one of those fast food places on the islands.

I think that alcohol is a liquid flammable. Pretty iffy should I want a great security experience. Make sure it%26#39;s cheap and that you don%26#39;t hesitate in throwing it away.

If I have to throw something away at the checkpoint, I open it first and put it in the trash upside down, or make it unusable.
