We%26#39;d like to snorkel once or twice while on the 3 islands listed above. We already will be snorkeling while on a Na Pali ocean trip. Which is more highly rated Kealakekua Bay on the BI or Molokini in Maui? They both seem to require expensive tours -- are they that much better than the best of the easy access shoreline spots? Either of them unique in special ways?
Snorkeling in Kauai, BI, and Maui
We haven%26#39;t been to Maui yet, but have visited the Big Island and Kealakekua Bay several times. Both times we have rented a double kayak and kayaked across the Bay to the monument side. The bay is fairly protected, and allows for pretty easy snorkeling. The water clarity at this location is amazing, and there is a very large variety of fish and eels here. The water depth drops off to about 150%26#39;, but it is easy to stay is fairly shallow water near shore, if you wish. On one visit we could hear a whale near the reef, and on another trip we were ';escorted'; by a large pod of spinner dolphins. We have snorkeled lots of spots in Kauai and the Big Island, and definitely rate Kealakekua Bay as the best. If you don%26#39;t want to kayak over yourself, there are several reputable tour companies that visit that area, and some go on to the Place of Refuge as well, which is another interesting place to snorkel.
Snorkeling in Kauai, BI, and Maui
due to geography, currents and weather, the Big island has the finest diving and snorkeling in all Hawaii. Visability in the 100 to 150 ft range, Kauai is plagued with runnoff from its rivers and streams, Oahu has Honolulu to deal wuth. Maui is in a current pattern of 3 other islands
Only Hawaii hae the direct flow of the trans-equatorial current to clean and feed its coastal waters. Kona is located only 120 miles north of the position that Tahiti is south...........Darwin and Wallace both classify the Big Island as Polynesia.... the american Tahiti
I am bias... from 40 experience diving...DOlphn Discoveries at 7:45 am... because it gets to Capt Cook first. has the best boats does more stops the the big boats and is passonate about the sea. Cost is about 90 am and 55 in the afternoon
