first visit to maui. staying @ maui prince-rental car. ? to do hana ourselves, stay over in hana, or take the reccomended Polynesian adv. tour????? we are not hikers.
tour for road to hanaDo you like to drive? If so, do it yourself. You will read alot about the scary hana road. It depends on your experience. I live in NC and my mom lives in the Smokey Mts. Curvy roads are wuite normal and no big deal. Frankly, I%26#39;ve seen roads worse than Hana%26#39;s in NC%26#39;s mts. It is a two lane, paved road. If you stay on your side, especially on curves - you%26#39;re fine.
You don%26#39;t need to hike. Just drive through, enjoying the scenry. Most of the waterfalls are right on the road. You just pull over, snap a picture and hop back in. If you don%26#39;t plan to hike, you can do it comfortably in one day. DO stop at the Oheo Gulch. It%26#39;s not really a hike, just a nice path, and worth seeing. If you like to swim, you can swim in the pools if the rain hasn%26#39;t been too much. Do drive all the way around. The road is very good and the scenry is quite different. You end up coming through the upcountry just down from Haleakala and it%26#39;s beautiful.
Not sure from your post, but you will want a car for your whole trip. There%26#39;s so much to see and drive to. You%26#39;ll miss so much without it.
tour for road to hanaThe fact you%26#39;re not hikers almost leaves me to say you might just want to take a tour, but even if you%26#39;re willing to do short amounts of walking, I%26#39;d say make the drive yourselves. As can been seen in my posts here regarding the Road to Hana I am very much for doing it yourself. I feel the tours skip far too much. If you are willing to spend a night in Hana (which I recommend) then that especially is true for the tours, they%26#39;ll do everything in a day that really takes two. You%26#39;ll miss a lot. The last posters points are also worth considering, as it is a good bit of driving.
I would highly highly suggest you purchase some sort of guide to help you judge whether this drive is for you or not. You can get a book like Maui revealed, Maui Mile by mile, or even Frommer%26#39;s for this, or you can get JUST the Road to Hana Guide from these guys:
hawaiianstylemedia.com/Guidebooks/Maui-Roadt…
For just 10 bucks, it should answer all your questions and it%26#39;ll let you know if this is for you or not. I stand by doing it yourself. See my other posts on the Road to Hana to get my personal ratings of each stop, or see my review on the TA Attractions page.
We did the Road to Hana and loved it. Drove ourselves and wouldn%26#39;t change a thing. We brought the map/CD right at the start of our trip there is a shack that sells them and the trip would have been a bust without it. The CD was perfectly timed to our journey and we made so many additional stops that would have easily been missed had we just gotten on the road and drove! We didn%26#39;t really hike so to speak, we too are not hikers, but we did get out and park at serveral locations that the CD suggested and we are so glad we did. Really it was the best $20 we ever spent. It really was a whole day event. I would pack more than just lunch because we could have used dinner as well in our cooler. Start early. But truely a drive I would do by myself, buy the map/CD, and pack 2 meals. Don%26#39;t take the tour......too much money and views that you could have seen in a picture book. You will get the same commentary from the $20 map/CD if not more. And to be very honest in our drive I did not see 1 tour bus! What the heck time do they go???? and how far do they go on the route???? When you do it yourself you can do as little or as much as you like. But the driving is all curves on a narrow road so if you get car sick take some medicine or don%26#39;t go at all!
If you don%26#39;t want to drive, our friends who were on their honeymoon, took the Temptation Tour and loved it. :)
islandmele- Do you have any pictures on your blog? I didn%26#39;t see any. Staying in Hana 3 nights next week and West side the rest! First trip!
Lizzie- I agree with the other posters. When you drive yourselves, you have the freedom to stop and smell the plumeria.
