Ok 1st you need to know which is a resort hotel and a condo complex. Kaanapli Beach Hotel is a very fine resort, The Whaler is a Condo complex. Kaanapli has a good mix of both.
You can save money by renting direct from a condo owner. My wife and I have found a great couple with an absolute beatuiful condo at The Whaler. If you are interested you can go to www.magicalmauicondo.com

All of the places you mentioned are wonderful places to stay on the best beach on Maui. It really depends on what you like. The Whaler is high density in high rise, Kaanapali Beach Hotel is a little more spread out but still high rise. These first two are right near Whaler%26#39;s Village and many other high rise hotels. Lots of people around. Maui Kaanapali Villas is north of Black Rock and the above mentioned places. It is low density and low rise (except for one 6 story building) and on a gorgeous beach that does not have many people on it. You can either walk or take the free trolley to Whalers Village. All to say it depends on your taste - do you like lots of people around or less people.
