hello
I%26#39;m a student on a fixed budget and I was wondering if anyone has stayed in any hostels near the waikiki beach...Are they safe and comfortable? I was also wondering if someone could recommend which one to stay in.
Thanks!
hostels-are they safe?
Do a search on this forum under hostel. I found a bunch of replies. Here%26#39;s just one of them:

Take everything I%26#39;m about to say with a grain of salt (do they use that expression in Oz?) as I%26#39;ve never been, this is just gleaned from reading websites and reviews:
According to their website, Banana Bungalow is ';temporarily closed'; (no details), and they are recommending people stay at Waikiki Beachside hostel.
Waikiki Beachside and Hostelling International both have 3 types of rooms, a dorm type room with bunks for 8-9, a more private room for 3-6, and a private room (shared bathroom). Air conditioning only in ';some'; of the rooms (applies to both). Pay phones only at Hostelling International, room phones with free local calls at Waikiki Beachside. Bring your own towels, but sheets provided (at both). Both have places to secure your stuff, but you may need to bring your own lock. Both are just a couple of minutes walk to the beach.
If you are inclined to choose the private rooms, be advised that you can get a regular hotel air conditioned private room for the same or less money at the Waikiki Prince (not to be confused with the Hawaii Prince or the Waikiki Prince Kuhio) or at the Royal Grove (both of these are also less than 5 minutes walk to the beach).
If you are young, adventurous, and sociable, however, you might enjoy meeting and making friends with people from around the world. The hostels have social activities and movie nights. Both look clean, both are close to the beach. Hard to tell exactly from websites, but Waikiki Beachside looks to be the nicer of the two, facility wise.

If I may recommend a budget hotel that we felt quite save in the Royal Grove is a small family owned hotel two short blocks from the beach. They have an older wing and the rooms are around $42 anite check their website. They also have beach toys and airmattresses for use.
