Merrie Monarch Festival

Does anybody know if the hula festival is televised to Kauai or not. My brother and his wife are flying into Lihue on Sat. and didn%26#39;t realize that it was this week. Also has anyone ever attended the festival and if so would you go again.

Merrie Monarch Festival

Hi Hulajake,

I arrive on Kauai April 20th and my TV will be tuned to Channel 4 (KITV) with a tape in the VCR Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings, to bring back to my daughter.

But you are in luck even if you aren%26#39;t in Hawaii during the festival, because TheHawaiiChannel.com will also provide live streaming video of the event online! How cool is that?

I wasn%26#39;t able to attend the Merrie Monarch Festival when my halau went (to watch - not compete) but I%26#39;ve always been happy with the Television coverage. Lucky for me, I%26#39;m usually on Kauai during Merrie Monarch so I can watch the days events every evening in the comfort of my condo living room.

Are you going to be on Kauai May 28th? If so, you might also enjoy the Hapa Haole Hula Competition at the Kauai Beach Resort (formerly the Raddison) tickets are only $10 at the door! Events start at 7 p.m. This is the 5th year for the Hapa Haole Competition. Nathan Kalama organizes this event every spring and also the Mokihana festival in the Fall. Information about the HHH competition can be found at http://www.kauaifestivals.com/HHHula/

Oops! Correction - make that April 28th for the Hapa Haole Hula Competition. I really need to proofread these things!

Thank you so much I%26#39;ll pass on the info about the tv I%26#39;ll have to find out if they can record it for us. Yes we%26#39;ll be in for too short of time, as it%26#39;s sounding like everything is happening that Friday night. We arrive the 26 and fly back to Oahu on the 29 for afew days.

Jake, worst comes to worst you can get a DVD of MM. http://www.merriemonarchfestival.org/

Nothing quite compares to actually being there; I recommend trying for tix one year if you can.

We have become fans of the hula upon our first exposure at the Kuhio Beach Torch Lighting and Hula Show. I%26#39;m afraid I don%26#39;t remember the group of musicians and I apologize to them however I do remember Malia Peterson being interduced as Miss Aloha Hula of 2002. Later as walked Kalakaua we passed in front of a shop with a tv directed outside and there were different groups of hula dancers upon the stage. I think we sat on a planter out front and watched for maybe half an hour before we finally went in and inquired about the video. We have two of the videos and will probably add more.

Malia Peterson tours and dances with Hapa now. My daughter had the privilege of dancing on stage with Malia and Nalani Higgins last month during the Hapa concert in Seattle! It was a thrill for my daughter - and for me watching!

Malia really knows how to make the hula come alive - I can see how you got hooked!

The Merrie Monarch is the most watched televised show in the entire state! It%26#39;s like our superbowl!

The Merrie Monarch Festival is truly something to behold. It is quite wonderful on television because you get the extra commentary, but NOTHING compares to being there LIVE in the synergy, energy and spirit of it all!

I%26#39;ve been blessed to have gotten RARE tickets as they are VERY HARD to come by unless you are a dancer or have connections with the halaus in the competition.

If you are a hula fan, dancer or aficionado, this is a once in a lifetime event that you cannot miss!

I may have been on TV in 2004. They pointed the camera right at me. I%26#39;m the one with the BIG grin giving a shaka. %26lt;G%26gt;
