Kona for 4 days

Planning to go to Hawaii with the family with 2 kids age 5 and 8 this August. Staying in Oahu for 5 days and then flying to Kona for 4 days. Will be arriving on Kona at 4pm on first day and leaving at 8pm on the 4th day. Second day I figure to rent a car and head to Volcanoes. How long of a drive is it. What can I do on the 3rd and 4th days? Thanks.

Kona for 4 days

Where are you actually staying? We just got back and we stayed at the Hilton. The pools were great for the kids and they had a lagoon that you could snorkel and little paddle boats for the littliest of children. We keep saying this would be a great place for children. They also have the dolphin quest and camps for the children. There are some nice beaches you could go to with kids but someone else could tell you better about that because we left our four little ones at home. I am not sure about how long it would take to get to Volcano because we stayed on Hilo side part of the time. I think it took us about 1 1/2 to just past Hilo and it is about 30 minutes from that point. But maybe someone more knowledgable than me could give you a better idea. Be sure and do the lava tube with the kids that was really neat.

Kona for 4 days

First.. rent a car when you arrive in order to save a $30 to $50 cab ride.

from Kona, via 11 south, it takes me about 2.5 hours without stops and driving at or under the speed limit. My trip computor indicated I averaged 31 mph. there is a lot of slow driving and over half the trip is with 35mph speed limits. Leave Kona by 0600 and get to the park by 0900... to take advantage of the parks morning ranger led free walks and talks. return via 19. allow 4 hurs in the park min.

Day3.......go to the Hilton ,with the kids that age and buy a day pass $80. they and you wiill love it. Or take a boat tour to capt cook for a half day and visit palce of refuge. Or go to the rainforset in Hawi and take the kids on flume da ditch...

day4. do nothing, pack and relax....

Hey I am so impressed with myself, looks like me and the expert agree. I might have been a little off on the travel time but not bad for a guess. And he is sooooo right about the Hilton. The whole time we were there I keep saying the kids would love this.
