I%26#39;m a huge sashimi fan (particularly ahi), so I am really excited about my first go at poke. Where can I get the best poke on Kauai?
Best Poke
there%26#39;s a fresh fish market across the street from wal mart in lihue, they have very good poke, and other fresh fish (if you have access to a kitchen/bbq grill).
Best Poke
It%26#39;s even good from Foodland in Kapa%26#39;a.
Pono Market in Kapa%26#39;a does good poke.
We ate poke from the Big Save in Koloa last week, and it was good.
Hands down the fish express--which is the place right across from the wal-mart. Its easy to miss as its in an office building so keep your eyes peeled.
went there everyday for 4 days straight.
If you are staying at the Islander then Pono Market and Foodland will be very convenient. I enjoy both but have a special fondness for the ahi with onion at Foodland.
I got a quarter pound at the Safeway in Kapaa (wasn%26#39;t sure if it would be good). It WAS good, wish I got more. I cut the pieces even smaller and ate it on Triscuits with horseradish sauce (didn%26#39;t have wasabi, but that would have added a nice kick too).
On the North Shore they had poke in the fresh fish store behind the Dolphin restaurant (right when you get into Hanalei). It was about $13.99/lb.($8.99 at Safeway) and had big onions in it- I passed and got a spicy tuna handroll instead. It had some tobiko and cucumber inside. They sliced it for me. That was $8. Yummy. By the way, we also got take-out rolls from Sushi Blues and we were unimpressed. We live in California and have great sushi/sashimi so we have something to compare it to. We tried three different ones (costing, 1@ 11.95 , 3 @ 13.95). These rolls were small, expensive and nothing special. The one we got two of, the Las Vegas? was described as yellowtail and avo in a roll that was dipped in Tempura and fried. We were imagining crispy outside and fresh, moist inside. Nope, tuna was cooked and thus, dry. We%26#39;d love to hear if you find another sushi place to recommend (we will be back to Kauai someday:)

P.S.The flavoring in Poke is really rather simple and I%26#39;m thinking I%26#39;m going to try to make some at home- it%26#39;s sesame oil, some sesame seed, green onion and probably a drib or drab of soy sauce. One supermarket in town sells sushi quality ahi.
Thanks for all of the suggestions. Sushi/sashimi grade is not cheap or easy to come by in Dallas, so I%26#39;m going to be out of control in Kauai.
