Crowded in early May?

We will be on the Big Island the first week of May. Should we expect large crowds this time of year?

Crowded in early May?

NBChica,

Not really. There are always tourists, but unless there is something going on the pace is usually steady. Memorial Day, Labor Day, July 4, and the Ironman Triathlon (Oct) are dates to avoid, as the number of tourists increases and the value of your dollar decreases.

Shoulder seasons are the best to visit Hawaii, spring and fall. I usually wait until November when the weather here is overcast and drizzling every day.

Here are two of many calendars available on the net:

Good luck and happy travels!

Crowded in early May?

In Hawaii there hace been for years seasons...Winter and Summer being the busiest. April -May Oct and the first Half of November and the First half of December.

However, The Big Island has bcome very popular over the past year. Folks that have been going to Kauai, Maui and Oahu are seeking new experiences

Visitation is up almost 12% over. Kona and Hilo now have 3 to 6 cruise ships a week... almost one a day( from NCL to the Queen Mary2)

Each bring 1500 to 2400 persons a day.

. Hotels are running at 80 to 100% and there are not anymore Hotels being built Marriott has launched a major re-build that will be complete at the end of the year...maybe. that will transfoorm it to much like the Hilton

The lulls are fast disapearing . ATA, Delta, United are all offering more flights to Hawaii with New nonstops from SanDiego, Oakland,Seattlle and Chicago

May wiill be slightly less crowded but nowhere near the lows of past years .

Greetings -- nbchica ---

Like you I will be in paradise for 10 days in early May. I am glad I took HawaiiDan%26#39;s advice in making some reservations ahead of time (Luau, Heli tour, Mauna Kea golf, night snokel) . . but we have open slots to sight see. Thanks to HD and TT and all the other posters for their comments and questions. We do learn so much from each other.

I have followed the Fodor%26#39;s travel talk forum and while it%26#39;s interesting in discussing many different places -- Trip Advisor is the best for specific inquiries and hotel reviews. Mahalo
