I will be staying in Kapaa June 30- July 7...was wondering if there are any farmers markets in that area for fresh fruit, veggies, nuts, etc
or is it the same as just buying it at safeway? I remember the fruits that I bought at the farmers market in maui was GREAT!
thanks
Farmers Market in Kapaa?
Lucky you...one of the best is in Kapaa! It is located just off the new circular at the bypass. Seasonal items are much fresher than store bought and quite different than anything you will see in Westminster.
You double check for the Wednesday market at noon or 3 when you get to your hotel Best bet for parking is to get there 1/2 hr in advance, then quickly circle tables/booths once for items and prices, and go for it.
Farmers Market in Kapaa?
Yes, there is a farmer%26#39;s market in Kapaa every Wednesday afternoon. If you take the Kapaa Bypass Road, you%26#39;ll see the ballfields where the market is held. It starts at 3:00 PM sharp, but if you%26#39;re a picky shopper, you might want to get there 15 minutes in advance, to get a good parking space and scope out the produce before the bell rings. Then you can have first pick. It%26#39;s helpful to have correct change - I just bring singles and quarters for quick transactions.
I%26#39;ll be there during your dates - picking out the best pineapples, papaya, lettuce, tomatoes, corn on the cob, watermelons and what ever else catches my fancy. Yes, the produce is much tastier than the produce shipped in to the chain stores. Safeway and the others often do provide locally grown produce too though. So, if you miss the market, you can still get some good fresh produce. The market is fun though.
wow! great info guys....I CANT WAIT!!
We will be staying in the Kapaa area too, in May, but don%26#39;t arrive until Thursday evening and leave the next Thursday evening. I really was hoping to hit a Farmer%26#39;s Market to stock up but it won%26#39;t do us any good if it%26#39;s only on Wednesdays. Does anyone know if there are any other Farmer%26#39;s Markets and which days and times they are held?
As vegs going to Hawaii/Kauai for the first time we are geeked about the fresh fruit, we can%26#39;t wait. Here is a link that provides info on Farmer%26#39;s Markets throughout Kauai:
http://realkauai.com/FarmersMarkets/
ALB101. You can go to the Friday 3 p.m. farmer%26#39;s market at the stadium near Lihue Airport. You can find a farmer%26#39;s market practically everyday on some part of the island.
Thanks for the great info!
Thanks for the information, I%26#39;ll be sure to hit the Friday market so we can stock up on delicious fruits and veggies for our week in the condo.
Monkeyfinger and ALB101: You will LOVE the farmers markets! My favorite is the one in Kapaa (huge variety) but we go to several during our stay. I get a big bouquet of tropical flowers and it lasts our whole vacation. Kauai is so full of beautiful scenery and things to do but the markets are what I look forward to every time we go.
We went to the Farmers%26#39; market last wednesday (2:00p.m.) in Hanalei. It was just as the guide book described it- locals and tourists. When the rope was dropped, the locals (or savvy tourists?) made a beeline straight to one of the tables. I followed behind just in time to see the last of the ';quests'; scooped up- plastic bags of varied lettuces. Ah, well. I bought a bag of some sort of dark green lettuce- the sort they usually line buffet tables with. It was good ($2). Also got a strawberry papaya, $3. Looked exactly like the papayas I saw the next day in the supermarket for .99 each :). Four plum tomatoes, ripe, was $2. Little bananas were priced per bundle, mine was $2.50. Cheaper in supermarket but I assume all this stuff is organic. I did spring $10 for six of what is called a mangosteen. Inside a plum sized and colored outer shell sits a bundle of white clove-like fruits, each sweet, slightly citrusy, and explained as the ';cadillac'; of fruits. Well, I don%26#39;t know about that. But the high price tag plus the novelty of it made a memorable moment for the kids. And isn%26#39;t that what travels to far away places are about?
So go to a farmer%26#39;s market and definitely buy something new, and even if you can find the same fruit cheaper at the supermarket, there%26#39;s something to be said for supporting the local guys.
