Scared of Bacteria from sewage.....................!!!!

Should I pick another island to go to in June?? I have already crossed Kaui off my list and long term stay on Oahu off my list. Are there other sewage problems on other islands we should be aware of???? I have gone to many websites and searched but have not found any bad info. on The Big Island or Maui...or did I not look close enough?? I know there is bacteria everywhere and you have to be careful everywhere but I wanted to go to a tropical place where I didn%26#39;t have to worry about walking in the water or on the beach.

No offense to Hawaii, but this is my one opportunity to go on a drem vacation and I don%26#39;t want to pick a location I have to worry about.

Scared of Bacteria from sewage.....................!!!!

We just returned from the Big Island and there were no problems there. They did not get the rains that Oahu and Kauai have gotten. They also did not have the sewage break that oahu had. The weather was clear and we had a great vacation.

We were in Oahu two nights and we did not swim in the ocean at all. It was two days after the signs came down. I would not recommend swimming there for a while. I am sure it will all be clean eventually. Kauai had flooding problems, but I am sure by June, it will be fine. I have not heard anything bad happening in Maui. Have you been following the local newspapers on line? The Star Bulletin is local to Oahu. The KITV news is one of the local network news stations that has a website with weather info that is more accurate than the stuff on weather.com. Also the Honolulu Advertiser is another Oahu newspaper. The West Hawaii Today is a Big Island newspaper.

I would definitely keep your plans to visit the Big Island and Maui. I am sure that Kauai is fine too. Oahu looked fine with the small area that we saw, but swimming...??, I would wait. That is just my 2 cents!

No one is going to take offense at your fears. Outside of these forums and the local Hawaii press, there is not much talk about what happened in Oahu. It is really a disgusting thought that all that sewage was dumped in the ocean and a week later officials are saying it is okay to swim in it...eeeww. The almighty dollar is taking precedent here. I, too was supposed to spend 6 nights in Oahu and 3 on Kauai and changed my trip last minute to two nights on Oahu and 7 on the Big Island. It was a great vacation. I am very glad that I changed my plans. Now, June is a ways away. That is why I think Kauai will be fine. I am sure Oahu will be in much better shape. You have to go with your own peace of mind on this one.

Thanks moved south!!!! Great info!! Where did you stay on the Big Island? and what is not to be missed on the Big Island?

Thanks!

We were scheduled to visit Oahu in mid June. We made the choice to jump island and are now going to Maui. I just didn%26#39;t want to spend so much $$ on our ';dream'; vacation and be worried about the water / ocean. Some may consider it going overboard, but it gives me peace of mind. If you%26#39;re going to make the change, do it quickly so that you will be able to get flights, hotels, etc., as it is very busy in June.

Vadreamer, what accomodations have you found on Maui? I think I am going to fly into Ohau to see Pearl Harbor and then Honolulu Zoo(for my son) spend the night one night(not going to the beach) then Island hop to Maui and The Big Island.

We stayed at the Hilton Waikoloa. It is a super resort with trams, boats, a lagoon with turtles(you swim with them!), pools, great restaurants. We loved this mega resort and would definitely return. You can also swim with the dolphins on the property. We did not do this.

It is located on the Kohala coast in an area called Waikoloa. It is about 30 min north of the airport.

Snorkeling is great so go to Costco and buy some gear and pack it to bring with you. Hapuna Beach, just north of the Hilton is a great boogie boarding beach. You can visit the volcano (other side of the island-day trip). We did this and it was neat. Not really my thing. We did a boat trip (snorkel cruise) with the Fairwinds group and they were very good. Boat is stable.

We saw tons of turtles everywhere we snorkeled. It is a nice relaxing place. It is a very rocky island. It is made up of lots of black lava. So, it is different looking. Parts of it are very lush and some parts look like a black lava desert.

We would definitely return.

discovertreasures: We changed from Outrigger Waikiki (Oahu) to the Kaanapali Alii, condos on Kaanapali Beach / Maui. We had to keep our original flight into Oahu, but were able to get a reasonably priced flight on Hawaiian Air from Oahu to Maui. After six nights on Maui, we%26#39;re headed to BI, which was part of our original plan. From everything I%26#39;ve read, the Hilton on BI seems very nice for kids, although it might be very busy. We%26#39;re staying at Hapuna Beach with our 13 year old, hoping it will offer a terrific beach for our son, and a more relaxing atmosphere for mom and dad (wink, wink!) Good luck with your planning.
