Should I buy the equipments or rent them? If I should buy, should I buy it here in CA or should I wait to buy it there?

thanks

Snorkel Equipment-buy or rent

Also, I%26#39;m thinking of getting the life vest for the kids. Should I buy or rent?

Snorkel Equipment-buy or rent

We bought our equipment at Costco. It is very good and cheap and did not leak. I can%26#39;t remember the price, but it was very reasonable considering what daily costs would be. It is also your equipment so it is only your mouth on the blow tube!

Kids vests I am not familiar with but I am sure if you find the other stuff at Costco, you will find this as well.

If you rent it, how do you get it clean? Just boil some water and put the mouthpiece in there or what? I%26#39;m not a germophobe or anything but I%26#39;d like the spit to at least be gone. haha

The rental company should disinfect all equipment as it is returned.

I prefer to have my own equipment, but if you don%26#39;t snorkel regularly it may make sense to rent for a short vacation. If you do buy, the Costco $39.99 sets are pretty decent equipment, and the fins are lightweight, which makes for easier packing.

I%26#39;m not clear on whether the life jacket is for general purpose or for snorkeling. If the latter, remember that a life jacket%26#39;s purpose is to keep one%26#39;s head out of the water, which makes it rather difficult to snorkel in one.

Rental places sterlize the masks and snorkels, so they should be fine. Well, they are supposed to. I think they soak them in bleach water. It%26#39;s not hard and there%26#39;s no reason why they shouldn%26#39;t, so they probably do.

You can get the same stuff as Costco at Walmart - abotu $25, mask, fins, and snorkel. Unless you get the unltra cheap stuff, that%26#39;s cheaper than renting for a week. Whether it fits is the luck of the draw. My husband%26#39;s didn%26#39;t fit him well, but mine did. I guess you could take it back if it didn%26#39;t work. I also considered taking his mask in to a rental place and see if they would be willing to trade or pay a little more for a mask that fits. I figure they could just throw it in their rental stuff. It%26#39;s an idea.

Other advantages to buying...

*If you ever come back, you already have your stuff. We finally bought ours on our most recent and forth trip to Hawaii. Just think of the money we would have saved over the previous 36 days we had spent in Hawaii.

* If your stuff gets stolen from your car, you only have to replace $25 worth of stuff. If you lose the rental stuff, I think it%26#39;s hundreds. On our October 2005 trip to Maui, we did have some things stolen, but we were lucky our snorkel stuff wasn%26#39;t in there. After that, I obsessed about it. We carried that stuff everywhere. In Feb 2006, it was much nicer to leave our stuff in the car knowing if somethign happened, it was no big deal.

I don%26#39;t think it matters when you buy it. You may have more selection in Maui. You have to haul it home either way. Don%26#39;t forget to take an extra bag or leave room if you wai tand buy it there.

I bought a set of good quality mask and dry top snorkel for only $15.00 (on sale). I checked the price on maui rental places online and the same set cost $22.00 a week to rent. Soooo....yea....I think it%26#39;s better to buy =). I plan to rent my fins in maui since I dont wnt to pack them. Fins are pretty big...
