I am returning to Oahu this summer to meet my brother who will be returning from the Gulf. (I went to elementary and intermediate school around Pearl City over 35 years ago.) As I recall, Waikiki is the place to avoid. Can someone suggest a safe place that is near the beach. My wife and kids (16, 14 and 10) who have never been there will be with me. We%26#39;ll only have a few days and I%26#39;d like to teach them to surf (if I still can), and find some great snorkling. THANKS!
Where to stay with kids
The Hilton Hawaiian Village will have a zillion things to do and is located at the end of the strip in Waikiki. We just spent two nights there, but it is a very kid friendly hotel with lots to do. You can rent a car to go to Hanumauna Bay or take a bus there for snorkeling.

Thanks. Can someone suggest something a bit farther from Waikiki? Mahalo.
I%26#39;ve heard there are villas or condos away from Waikiki that are a better value and think that might be better than two rooms in the Waikiki area.
Try kailua..and don%26#39;t let the ';illegal rental'; posters on this forum sway you either. Kailua would be a perfect place for you to rest and unwind, and still take in some beach time.
we stayed at the new otani hotel near diamond head and loved it. Close to restaurants but seperate from waikiki. Affordable and right on a wonderful beach. And the sunday brunch, wow.
I like the idea of being a bit out of the hustle and bustle. How can I find out more about Kailua? I don%26#39;t know anything about illegal rentals. What does this refer to?
I haven%26#39;t been there recently, but the Turtle Bay hotel (was a Hilton last I knew) had ';cottages'; that we liked when our son was young. It%26#39;s North Shore, near where the surfing champs hang out, and near a nice park with waterfall -- is it Wailea Park? They also have polo up there. Very NOT Waikiki! Will you get to tour Pearl Harbor, Punchbowl and Schofield? Happy for you, meeting your returning brother!

if you type in ';illegal rentals'; in the search in forum..it will probably give you more info then you ever wanted. I have checked this out and there are lots of places to rent in Kailua that are really nice and family oriented..check out vrbo.com
Kailua is a little community on the East side of Oahu. Beautiful beaches, a few retaurants, most of the kayak companys work out of Kailua, small town feel, just a lovely little town. There are no resorts, but lots of B%26amp;B rentals and vacation rentals. That%26#39;s where the doom and gloom posters come in practically promising you a visit from the ';illegal rental '; henchmen who will throw you out into the street...they breathe a lot of hot air, but that%26#39;s it. Rumour has it that they are not actual posters, but government officials hoping you will leak info to them about the illegal rentals. They rear their ugly heads about once a month. I%26#39;m sure my post will cause a stir with them....
Thanks for the advice. ChiSue, I%26#39;ll check out the Turtle Bay hotel. A cottage might be a good idea as multiple hotel rooms get expensive. I%26#39;m sure we%26#39;ll take in Pearl Harbor, Haunauma Bay (I remember the a big pool that was sort of like a Blow Hole that we swam in) and probably even a luau.

The term “illegal” vacation rental refers to commercial vacation rentals and B%26amp;B’s that are located in residential neighborhoods that are not zoned for commercial use. Staying is an “illegal” vacation rental or B%26amp;B promotes the proliferation of these illegal businesses and causes resentment toward the tourism industry by local residents (a recent survey stated 70% of Hawaii%26#39;s residents want them “strictly controlled” and “limited” to neighborhoods where neighbors want them). As far as I know, no government officials are posting to any threads on TA, but many local residents are trying to warn unsuspecting vacationers that they may be participating in “illegal” rental activities. For some odd reason, very few vacation rentals %26amp; B%26amp;B’s web-sites advertise if they are legal or “illegal” and few vacationers are aware they may doing something wrong.
