I was in Hawaii a few years ago and at one restaurant they put an automatic 15% on my bill (I was dining alone). I think they might have thought I was Japanese. Is this a common practice in Hawaii? Has anyone else encountered this? I know that for parties of I think 6 they put the automatic tip on your bill.
Automatic tip added to bill
Any restaurant I have ever eaten in that had an automatic tip policy had it on the menu and displayed. Personally I don%26#39;t care for the policy but sort of understand the need for larger parties.
Automatic tip added to bill
There is a restaurant on the corner of Kuhio and Seaside that adds a suggested tip of 15%. If you don%26#39;t look carefully at the bill you might not notice that it%26#39;s just a suggestion. We had good service so were happy to pay it. However if the service was bad one is free to tell them to stick it.
I%26#39;ve never heard of doing this for a lone diner. Frequently for parties of 5-6 or more, though.
I%26#39;m sure one big reason for this is that Japanese tourists often forget to tip (as there is no tipping in Japan) so I noticed there was a stamp on the back written in Japanese and english stating something like %26#39;15 % added to your bill for your convenience%26#39;.
Funny thing is that they told me something was wrong with the register and they could take it off if I wanted.
We stayed on Oahu at the end of March and noticed that a few restaurants included the tip on our bill even though there were only four of us. I can understand that with a large group, but not just for 4 people. We were very careful checking our bill every time.
that%26#39;s the best thing to do..check the bill...
