My husband and I will be going to Kona for the first time. I would like to take a bike tour. Has anyone heard of Kona Coast Cycling Tours? Has anyone been on a tour with them? They seem to offer the best bikes, guides, transportation and food for the $$$.
We prefer coastal road biking instead of mountainous tours, any ideas, comments or suggestions will be helpful.

Bike tours of Kona Island
aloha hapa-d, I love your new name, kona island. cute. a couple of comments, as I live on kona island. :-) unless you are Really in shape and like to punish yourself, it%26#39;s generally too hot for biking, or jogging. I see people biking and jogging all the time, they have bright red, sweaty faces and look like they%26#39;re not having very much fun to me. our coastal ';highway'; here is very dangerous to bicycle on - there are accidents on the road quite often, with unforgiving , jagged lava fields on the roadside - black, hot, radiating heat - the roads can get hotter than the normal temps at the beach. so I%26#39;d recommend not booking anything until you%26#39;ve arrived and decided for yourself whether you still think this would be a fun idea...
Bike tours of Kona Island
I know its a mainland thing mEntALity to refer to THE BIG ISLAND of Hawaii as Kona, but what about Hilo
and someone might think wrongly that Hilo and Kona are
on separate islands instead of just a long drive apart
across the islands
just some thoughts to consider
that is suppose to read acrosss the Island
NOT islands
and dont forgot Madame Pele is showing more FIRE
right; then there%26#39;s also the confusion about the Island of ';Hawaii'; vs the Hawaiian Islands..the town of Waimea/Kamuela..towns on at least 2 islands called Kailua..and the confusion over north/south kohala coast vs kona coast...etc...
wow, thanx for so much information. As for our Southern California thoughts about road/hilly bikes rides, we do ride road bikes frequently here along the pacific; but our roads are not along jagged highways, and most likely not as dangerous, I am sure.
We are due to arrive on the 14th, maybe we will take you up on your advice and wait %26#39;til we arrive to book and might just reconsider all together.
Thanks so much.....
This is not a bike friengly isle due to huge elevation changes 4000 ft is common. And Narrrow roads along the shore on Alli drive.
Wind and a heat can be a very big factor too....
The best way to see the island is by 4x4... to get you to all the secret beaches and the stuff of dreams. From Mauna Kwas 1400%26#39; to Waipo Rain forest and jungle rivers................this is a big place................larger than all the other Haeiian island put together
Get Big Island Revealed guide............... its the best... I live here and I use it !!!
True this island, or any of the Hawaiian Islands for that matter, are not bike friendly. However, if you know where to go (and Kona Coast Cycling does) you can find some great, safe riding. Keep in mind, if you are looking for a 60+ mile workout, its best to just rent a bike and go ride. Kona Coast Cycling has fully supported tours, (guide, van food water, mechanic, ect.) easy to moderate. Their basic tours are fun, let芒聙聶s get out of the car and see Hawaii from a bike tours.
Kona Coast tours look pretty good to me -- most are downhill, on less-travelled roads. They%26#39;re not sending you out on Highway 19 or Alii Drive. I think the Old Mamalahoa Highway Tour looks quite nice ... It starts in Waimea so there might be a bit of drizzle, but you are probably used to that. Doesn%26#39;t seem like any of their tours are super challenging, but if you want a nice leisurely ride, it looks like fun to me! It%26#39;s probably not the greatest idea to set out on the ironman course by yourself ... but I think you%26#39;ll do fine with KC.
