In 2 weeks my husband and I will be in Maui for a much needed vacation. We want to take a fishing charter but have noticed some unfavorable experiences. We will be staying in Kihei, any suggestions on charter companies? should we book in advance of our trip? We both love to fish and want this to be a worthwhile excursion.
Maui Fishing Charter
While you can%26#39;t guarantee that you will catch anything on any charter except maybe some sunshine, aren%26#39;t all fishing charters just an excuse to be out on the boat and hope for a hook up?
My hubby and best friend used Start Me Up out of Lahaina in March. They had a great time. Didn%26#39;t really catch much (hubby caught a Mahi Mahi and a Skipjack) but the real reason they had such a great time was because they were on Maui, out on the ocean with lines in the water, drinking beer and having a great time.
Just remember not to take bananas on the boat. I packed their lunch for them and when they saw the bananas in the bag they both shook thier head and said ';Don%26#39;t you know your not supposed to take bananas on the boat??'; Silly me
Maui Fishing Charter
It may be an old wives tale, but it%26#39;s a fact that bananas are Bad Luck on a fishing boat. History tells us that this tale originated from early years when boats with Bananas in the cargo ran aground, got lost at sea, or lost many of their crew members to a deadly sickness. Further investigation indicated that the bananas were prone carry to the deadly tarantula spider!
I heard about the NO Banana%26#39;s when I was on the West Coast of Florida is past January. My Uncle is very Big into Game fishing. He gave me a CD by a fishermen named Capt. Sam Crutchfield called ';No Banana%26#39;s';. This is where I first heard about the no banana rule on fishing boats. My husband who also fishes knew about this (where have I been).
Alohawahine - could you tell me the price your husband %26amp; buddy paid for their fishing trip? How many people? etc . .
My husband has been talking about taking a fishing trip on our upcoming trip this Sept. I would love to surprise him :)
I think it was $175 each. Included all tackle, etc. It was an 8 hour trip, leaving Lahaina at 4:45 a.m. They had a great time.
Now I know about the bananas. I seriously thought they were pulling my leg at first, but by the seriousness that they both said ';NO BANANAS';, I figured it must be some kind of superstition deal. Silly me...I just wanted to make sure they were getting some potassium.
Hubby and Buddy do a big fishing trip every year out of San Diego and they go into Baja for Tuna. 30 guys on the boat. No WIVES, No GIRLFRIENDS, just the guys. Thanks goodness they don%26#39;t let the girls go. I don%26#39;t really WANT to go, but would feel like I had to if the rest of the girls were going. The boys even put together a website for the upcoming trip in August. Kinda funny. mahanfishingcharterdotcom in case anyone wants to see how silly the boys are.
Thank you for the info Alohawahine. I am not at all into fishing but hubby is. We live on Long Island, NY and fishing season is just starting here. My husband is really into surfcasting and fishing off the Long Island Sound. Every year we go to Montauk (The Hamptons) for some serious stripe Bass fishing. Although I am not into fishing and more the beach vegging type.
Although it will be just the 2 of us on this next trip to Maui, I would not mind going out fishing with him. I would prefer staying behind but what can I say . . . Thanks again for the info.

My best friend lives on Long Island. Long Beach to be exact. It%26#39;s been years since I went to visit.
I was happy that the boys went without me. I stayed in Lahaina and did the girly shopping thing and let the boys go without me. There were two other couples on the boat with the them and one of the girlfriends on the boat was SICK the whole time. Poor Girl. The boys didn%26#39;t cut her any slack. Actually tried to give her a beer and some Ahi Poke to help her stomache. comedians I tell you
Have a great trip
