Today is our 3rd day on the BI and we are having a blast. I%26#39;ll have lots to report in a trip report when we get back, but this forum and the Big Island Revealed are the best! We have already done and seen so much. We did the helicopter tour over the volcano (from Hilo), saw Akaka Falls and other sights in Hilo, Waimea and surrounding area. We went boogie boarding at the beach and have spent time at the pools. Today my husband is scuba diving.

The weather has been absolutely beautiful. Some of the locals have told us this is the nicest weather they have had in weeks. The only thing that surprised me is how windy it is here. It was so windy and cold the other night we couldn%26#39;t eat outside. Last night was breezy, but not nearly as cool. Even during the day it is quite windy here. So my advice - be sure to pack a light sweater or two!

Wind.....you must be in waikoloa....Known localy as'; Waik-a-blowa'; where Hapuna often gets 40mph....... ande up in Hawi too

i know on hapuna beach, they often have ';sand tornedos'; (someone please correct me on what they are really called!)

It happened four times last time we were there.

they would not put up the unbrellas because it was SO windy!

Yes, we are in Waikoloa - and I learned about Waika-blow-a when I asked someone at the hotel yesterday if it was always this windy here. Today is much less windy, but a little more overcast. Still beautiful - and hot!

We didn%26#39;t see any sand tornadoes at Hapuna Beach, but my kids did enjoy boogie boarding there. The waves were fun, but not too big - which was fine by me - just made for a safer day with less worries!

Glad you are having a great time handdog! We just returned from Waikoloa and the Hilton hotel. I was also surprised at the wind. I also needed to wear a sweater at night.
