I live in the Chicago area. I know it seems strange to post here, but I thought people would have an idea of some chain stores and / or the type of store we should look in?
Thanks.
Where can I find reef walkers/snorkel shoes?
go online...ebay is a good place to start.
do a google for dive shops in your area and call %26#39;em.
are you buying for use in the midwest? Walmart in hawaii would be another option if to be used on vacation...one less thing to pack .

They had them at Costco and Sports Authority
My husband bought two pair in a sports store next to the kayak shop on the road between Poipu and Koloa. There%26#39;s also a small Mexican restaurant there.
As Datedog said...
Costco has some really cool Speedo Water Shoes right now (at least in SoCal). They%26#39;re really lightweight, with mesh sides, and neoprene around the ankle and arch to prevent chafing. Thirty bucks. The fiance and I bought them for our honeymoon. They should serve us for both hiking and water stuff (though I hear the line is blurred in Kauai).
There%26#39;s also this type of hiking/sandal/water shoe combo I%26#39;ve seen that is like a hiking boot, but with lots of open cuts/vents, which look pretty cool and seem handy. You can get the fancy Keen brand for around $90 or you can hit Sports Authority/Sportmart and they have non-name ones for $40 (usually on sale for less). Check out Sports Authority%26#39;s website, as they have a lot of ';Water Shoes'; on sale now.
All of these beat those ';water socks'; that are a rubber sole with an integrated mesh sock. I hate those things, but they are cheap, Target had them on sale for $4.50 a couple weeks ago.
I just bought some for my mom from Walmart for $4.90

I saw those at a couple of places that I shopped in. I didn%26#39;t look at the price tho. I saw quite a few people wear them on the beach or hiking around.
BUT, for just reef shoes - you can get them cheap at alot of places.
LIke Walmart, Walgreens, etc....for cheap.
Just got a pair of Teva water/hiking shoes for about $40 at SierraTradingPost.com. They had other brands as well. Check them out.
I also have the ';Keen'; sandals that tjbrooks mentioned and I love them. Go to Zappo%26#39;s shoes online and type in the search box ';Keen Newport H2';. and there is a ton of customer reviews about this shoe. I%26#39;ve had mine for a year now and have used them on the beach, hiking and just general walking around and they hold up so well.. they are $90 but a good investment on something that will last a long time.
The keen Newport H2 is a great all around hiking/water sandal. They work great for getting to those tough to access beaches and also on the hiking trails with lots of mud and stream crossings. (Kalalau) You can sometimes pick them up on Ebay for $50-$60. Gander Mountain and Cabelas aslo carry them.
