Maui Vacationers--
Is there anything you new returnees wished you had taken and did not OR anything you wished you had done differently while there? Thanks for your comments for those of us waiting to go and hoping we have planned it well and get to do it all the Maui things we really want to... This Forum is such a help to those of us planning the ';Trip of our Dreams';... Thanks to all who share...
Anything you wished you had taken or done and did not?
Other than delayiing my return by a decade or so....not a thing.
Anything you wished you had taken or done and did not?
Maybe it is not quite on point, but I have to learn to pack fewer books. I always have the idea that I am going to sit on chair with incredible views and actually read. It never happens. I always end up just looking around, maybe taking a nap, but basically just enjoying being outside. You can always pick up something to read there, if necesssary. My days of packing four books should be over. Next time it will be one book, a travel guide, and maybe an issue or two of the New Yorker or the Atlantic. That is more than enough for a week.
It is tough to stay in the sun all day so remember to bring games(backgammon, scrabble, cards, etc.) with you. We will find a shaddy area in the afternoon to play games and have cocktails.
Now I wish I would have made a point to pay attention to the sunsets. We were always doing something or on the go at that time, and now I can%26#39;t remember the sun setting.
Also, somehow I missed shave ice. I really looked forward to trying it and past the opportunity a few times. I never got to try it.
So if you want to do something, just do it! Don%26#39;t put it off for later:)
I too packed too many books. I didn%26#39;t even finish the one I started.
dreamin4maui, I always pack too much clothes. I end up wearing a couple of pairs of shorts/ tank tops. And have all these extra clothes I never wore the entire stay. So each time I go, I try to remember to pack less clothes and less flip flops!
I%26#39;ve been several times now but I remember after my first trip I realized I had packed too much into each day. I visited 4 islands in 16 days and hit almost every sight. I went to Hawaii and I saw Hawaii alright but I never really visited Hawaii.
II would now recommend a visit to any island for at least 7 days. The only exception is Oahu where you can spend 4 days hitting Pearl Harbor, Waikiki and the drive around the island.
It takes at least 7 days to get into the routine of the island - 10 is better. Go once and you will be back. Don%26#39;t try to see it all the first time.
Relax...breath...read...swim...sun...eat...sleep...aloha
Amen to that lahainaluna! I saw every possible thing on Maui...but I really wished I could have just stepped back...took the camera away from my face and seen the waterfall/flower/sunset with my own two eyes. A vacation is about seeing stuff...but a visit to Hawaii is also about renewing your soul..IMO!
I would have bought more stuff at Kmart on the way from the airport. As I am a red head from Seattle I was a not really thinking about the huge lack of shade. Palm trees are nice but they have skinny trunks so you have to keep moving as the sun moves!! I would have bought a beach umbrella!
My last trip was in 04. As I am getting ready to go in 49 days, I have to agree with the packing too much statement. I was going thru my closet and found clothes that I bought for the last trip. I hauled these clothes to Maui and back and never removed the tags or wore them. Looking at them now I remembered thinking when I came back that I would wear them next time. Here it is ';next time'; and I am not even thinking of taking them. Everything that is going will be carry on only, a couple pairs of shorts, a bathing suit, some tank tops and my hiking shoes. Only 2 books this time as well, Maui Trailblazer and Snorkle Maui %26amp; Lana%26#39;i which were a blessing last time. I also have to agree with not bring too many books. I brought a book to read knowing that here in So. Cal when I go to the beach I spend the day looking at the ocean. I was so excited to finally land on Maui that I stuck the book in the back of the seat and left it. I did not miss it since the beaches on Maui are way better than So. Cal. So I guess my advice is just go and enjoy whatever it is that you choose to do.
I will admit that I packed more than Mrs. S. and I didn%26#39;t need to do that. Really wished we had more time to explore. There are still places we have missed, like Surfing Goat Dairy.
