Shorts in fancy restaurants?

I just read on one of these topics that you can wear sandals (flip flops) and shorts at nice, expensive restaurants? Is that true?

Shorts in fancy restaurants?

For lunch, definitely.

You can wear shorts at most nice restaurants for lunch or dinner. I%26#39;m not sure about flip-flops at dinner. They may not kick you out, but neither my wife nor I would to that.

Shorts in fancy restaurants?

You may be able to get into a nice restaurant with most clothing, but I ask why not dress up a little when you are out at nice place?

It is sad when the busboys are dressed better than the customers.

I strongly agree with that last post. My wife and I would usually put on pretty nice clothes when we went to nicer restaurants in Maui. Unless we were eating early, I rarely wore shorts (and yet I survived), I always wore a nice shirt, and if we were eating later in the evening, even tossed on a sport coat. My wife appreciated that, since as the evening wore on the temp would dip and she usually would end up in it.

Nice shorts and nicer sandals are definetly acceptable at the ';fancy'; i.e. - ';expensive'; restaurants in Maui. I rarely saw anyone in pants and we dined at all of the top restaurants - Spago, Mama%26#39;s, Humuhumu, Nick%26#39;s, etc. Most men were wearing khaki shorts and either Hawaiian shirts or nice Polo shirts, and sandals. I wouldn%26#39;t consider any of these restaurants extremely ';fancy';, they are mostly open air or outdoors with a tropical laid back atmosphere - the prices are those of an upscale, uptight restaurant but the atmoshphere is very welcoming to casual attire. I never once saw anyone turned away from a restaurant because of what they were wearing. We even saw a couple pull their child soaking wet from the pool in front of Nick%26#39;s at the Fairmont Kea Lani and walk in to sit down for dinner towel and all- that%26#39;s a little over the top, but they weren%26#39;t turned away.

I hate dressing up - even here in NC. I wear jeans and a T-shirt to church. But that%26#39;s just me. I wore shorts everywhere. We didn%26#39;t eat at any of the ';fancy'; restauarants, but had we I would have been there with my shorts. I think as long as you aren%26#39;t in bathing suits and cuts off, you%26#39;re okay.

I feel there is dressing casual, and then there is dressing sloppy. I don%26#39;t understand why someone would want to wear the same thing they just wore on a hike or around the pool to a nice restaurant. When one goes to a nice/fancy restaurant on the mainland the men usually wear a coat and tie, and the women a dress. Hawaii is different and more casual, so a open collared aloha shirt or polo shirt is fine, but not a t-shirt, shorts and flip-flops. Yes, you will see people dressed like this at Spago or David Pauls, but they will be conspicuously under-dressed. If you are having a special dinner (and spending $200 at a nice place should be considered special), then don%26#39;t you want to dress a little special also? I sometimes get the feeling that the tourists know they can%26#39;t go out to nice places back home dressed for yard work, but do it in Hawaii because they know they can get away with it.

That is is the key phrase, ';if you can get away with it';. On Maui, as long as you don%26#39;t show up is sandy surf trunks without a shirt or shoes, you should be fine. As everyone has said, dressing up can be as simple as a nice pair of shorts, an Aloha shirt, and sandals. Dressed like that, you won%26#39;t ever feel out of place. There have been restaurants on Maui in the past who would require more formal wear, and lets just say they were not very successful.

Jeans shorts, t-shirt and flipflops to someplace like Alexcanders or even Kimo%26#39;s.

NICE shorts, aloha shirt and nice sandals to Joe%26#39;s, or Seawatch.

I never pack pants or a jacket when travelling to Hawaii, especially during the humid summers. I%26#39;m not a slob, except on weekends. I wear a tie and lab coat everyday to work, so it%26#39;s nice to dress down especially when in nice places on the islands.

actually, wearing a tie on Maui kind of calls attention..';is that guy a fed or something';?

agree with removing sand, seaweed, and snorkel mask from your body in any restaurant that has a hostess. for local grinds, ';it no matter.';

We saw all kinds of dress at various restaurants. Mrs. S. usually wears a nice Hawaiian print dress and I usually wear nice shorts and a Aloha shirt. We did usually eat early. Hard to get the east coast time to adapt.
