I will be in Hawaii for a week in the middle of January with two girlfriends (in our mid 20s). We are definitely going to Maui for a few days, but also want to take a ferry to a more secluded island for a day. We%26#39;d like to rent a jeep and do a lot of site seeing so I%26#39;m trying to figure out which would be a better choice, Lanai or Molokai? Does one island out do the other and if so, how? Are they pretty comparable price wise for the ferry and jeep rental? Also, can you pay for the ferry tickets and jeep rental in advance or do you have to wait until you get there? Any information would be of great help. Thanks!
Lanai or Molokai?
I have not been to Molokai, however my husband and I stayed on Lanai for 7 nights for our honeymoon. I think for a 1 day exploration it is a better bet, if for no other reason than its size. You can easily drive around it in one day. The town is small and compact. Munroe Trail runs right over the top of the mountain giving you views of almost all of the Hawaiian islands.
There are some good little restaurants in town. There is no night life, so you can head back to Maui in the evening shuttle without missing anything. Check Eco Lanai if they are still open. Dollar%26#39;s Jeeps are not able to go off road and twice as expensive. Eco%26#39;s have the big tires, they even hooked us up with a cooler full of drinks and snacks, snorkel gear and boogie boards.
Really mellow and lots of fun.
Lanai or Molokai?
I agree with the previous response, but I am a big Lana%26#39;i fan. Being a smaller island, you can rent a jeep for the day and see most of the island. And yes, Adventure Lana%26#39;i Ecocentre is the best place to rent a 4x4. Make sure you call a few days in advance for a reservation, and they will meet you with the jeep at the harbor. It is so much fun to drive to remote parts of the island, and be the only people on a huge beach. The resorts are fantastic, so make sure you visit them. Lunch at Pele%26#39;s Other Garden or the Blue Ginger Cafe are great and very reasonable. Enjoy!
Unless the Molokai Mule Ride is of interest, would agree with kelly and drval.
