Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea visitor center

I%26#39;d like some advise on whether this makes sense, or is too ambitious: sleep at the Mauna Kea SRA cabin, hike the Mauna Loa Observatory trail starting early the following day, hopefully make it back down by 4-5 pm, then drive to the Mauna Kea visitor center (not the summit) for star-gazing. If this makes sense, what%26#39;s a good place to return to that night: back to the cabin along Saddle Rd (I%26#39;ve read that this may be dangerous at night), or drive to Waimea or to Hilo?

the cabins dont have water.....but... driive to the Mauna Loa obvs end of the roaf it is a 6 to 8 hour rt 4 mile trek 8000 foot total elevation gain loss and IiI just talked to a couple who did it. Driving at night on Saddle road iis safer than day.... you can see headlights.... drive slow...
